First of all, you said you wanted to compare 80's with today... and than you took possibly the worst year from this period, with Tyson still not present in top10 and Holmes already a bit past prime. Tyson alone destroys anyone from 2010, and Holmes beats everyone with possible exception of Klitschkos. The rest of the list also favours 80's.

What I actually wrote was "[...] compare it to an equally (maybe) horrible period of time in the 80s". My point is that the current state of affairs in the HW division maybe isn't the worst we've seen.
Wouldn't be much use, then, to compare today with a good period of time in boxing, now would it?

You would know this, if you bothered to read the post properly. Now you've just wasted your (and my) time.

Don't ask me - ask Ring Magazine.
I think the have Boytsov there on hope alone. He's got KO power, he's athletic and fast... everybody just wants him to be good. Me too... but I just don't know yet.

    You may be right.
If a pumped-up light heavy like Spinks could do it, maybe a pumped-up cruiser like Haye could pull it off. Not sure about Haye's ability as a heavyweight yet, though...

wow...that's an impressive rebuttal...and whether they are afraid to fight each other or not is clearly not the point of the thread...thanks for adding absolutely nothing....

    2010>1985

even if you throw in overrated tyson it's still very competitive...cuz in order to be better tyson would have to step up in competition and we all know historically how that worked out for him...

The only thing i will say is that Dimitrenko and Arreola might not be 9 and 10. Odlandir Solis i feel is a better fighter than Dimtrenko and Peter better than Arreloa. In this case i will go with your top ten.

The only way to seriously evaluate each year is to do a top 20.

    C: Wladimir Klitschko (modern)
    1. Vitali Klitschko (modern)
    2. David Haye (modern)
    4. Michael Spinks[/B]
    5:pinklon Thomas
    6: Larry Holmes
    7: Tim Witherspoon
    8: Tony Tubbs
    9: Alexander Povetkin (modern)
    10:Tomasz Adamek (modern)
    11: Ruslan Chagaev (modern)
    12: Eddie Chambers (modern)
    13: Greg Page
    14: Denis Boytsov (modern)
    15: Nikolai Valuev (modern)
    16: Gerrie Coetzee
    17: Trevor Berbick
    18: Carl Williams
    19: Mike Weaver
    20: Michael Dokes
    21. Alexander Dimitrenko (modern)
    22. Chris Arreola (modern)

Good point, in fact this is why is it hard to gauge fighters in generality. It does not have conclusive answers and never will.

If we took perhaps a comparison of 1982 and 2010, then Larry Holmes could well be the number 1 or number 2 guy fighting Wladimir for top spot.

If we took 1987 then i feel 87 would have Tyson, Tucker as number 1 and 2.

So it depends on the year and where the fighters are in there carrers.

the 1985 class was slightly better imo. I can also see Larry Holmes beating both Klitschkos

On the other hand, I would easily pick both Klitschkos and Haye to beat Spinks and I am not sure Spinks beats everyone else in the 2010 top ten.

Anyone that thinks Povetkin would beat Tim Witherspoon needs their head examined.

Actually, correct that. Anyone that thinks Haye would KO a 1985 Holmes needs to be sent to an asylum. The guy takes 9 rounds to beat an old, inactive Ruiz for **** sake and even then it wasn't a KO.

Actually, Carl "the Truth" Williams looks pretty ripped in that pic - for a HW, anyway. Try putting that guy next to Chris Arreola.
