Billy Petrolle was my hero growing up and incredibly tough. He could match up with any lightweight for a tough night. Also Lou Ambers. And of course, what can never be explained but just seen to be believed, the Marciano. He gets no respect here, but was the strongest, toughest heavy I ever saw. They say could he beat the Klitscos? He'd beat them black and blue. What an animal in the ring, with the most underated defense in boxing history. What do you other oldtimers think?
Stonehammer, did you actually see the Fargo Express fight.? Unfortunatly i go back, but not that far back... i suppose I'm one of the few that saw Rocky Marciano live. I saw him utterly destroy Carmine Vingo at MSG in 1949, and saw him train at the airport hanger at Grossingers,Sullivan County in NY..I forget for which fight he was training for, but we sat about 2ft from the ring, and almost felt the steamrolling punches on his sparring partners..Thud,Thud thud.. today some boxing fans are obsessed with weight when judging the modern heavyweights..I believe that the ideal boxing champion of my time was Joe Louis...200 lbs of great handspeed, mixed with awesome power and leverage, not encumbered by lugging an extra 30 pounds, over the long haul...I feel like Nathan bedford forrest, who said,"get there Fustes with the Mostess ". Speed kills, I say...
No sir. I was born in 1927, so I read about him in The Ring and my Father would regale me with tales of him. Thus, a fine hero. Yes, I believe Louis, Marciano and Dempsey could knockout any fighter that lived. All those big muscles of bodybuilding and size do not matter. Louis would cut through todays heavy division like like a hot knife thru oleo'. As for Marciano, I'd rather be hit by a bus. ha, ha. If you saw him, you know why. My great grandson is doing the typing for me, si I must give him credit.
Don't know T, but I remember the old saying that says- A man is as old as he FEELS ! Well I say, " A man is as old as the GIRL he feels "..What the hell !!!atsch
Iran Barkley, Vinny Pazienza and Evander Holyfield are 3 recent fighters who were tough as hell. Barkley would fight pretty much anyone, and a quote directly from him that I believe he meant:"To beat me he's gonna have to kill me, and I ain't ready to die." Vinny Paz for his comeback from a broken and overall meanness. Holyfield- Self explanatory.
Respect! I enjoy posts from you guys who were there in the 40s and 50s,and seen these guys,My Grandpa told me Jack Dempsey was one tough fella.
