How much respect would Dunne have lost for dropping the WBA belt though? He was already Euro champ so to drop the belt he worked so hard for and take a backwards step in fighting Munroe would have been a bad move imo. Munroe never showed any interest in fighting Dunne for the Euro belt anyway, the only legit offer ever made from Maloney was after Dunne won the world title, would Munroe have come over here without the WBA belt on the line? I don't think so.

Taking on one of the best fighters in his division, win or lose, leaves a much better legacy for Dunne than vacating his hard earned belt without even trying to defend it.

 

It could have been spun in a way that it was made look like it was an honour or pride thing.

A couple of weeks of press releases of Munroe/Dunne and Peter/Maloney brickering and then a big announcement. I wouldnt that been that hard to make fly.

Munroe would have come for the biggest pay day in his life.

 

If he wanted to get out of Poonsawat he should have just blamed trying to make weight and gone up to feather to fight Izzy Vasquez for the IBO title at feather which was a possibility at the time. That would have been a big fight and although the belt wouldnt have carried much repsect beating Vasquez would have and made him a big name in america in the process.

He would have looked very stupid giving up a world title to go back and challenge for the European title and even more stupid if Munroe managed to beat him!

 

Jeffries has been rubbish as a pro though so you would have to give Tolan a small chance although Sweeney handled him pretty easy.

 

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see Dunne - Munroe and I've no doubt it would've been a huge fight, I just hate seeing fighters vacating belts to avoid dangerous opponents. If there was any way of getting Poonsawat to step aside for a few months Peters should have made that happen. Dunne deserved at least one easy defense.

I would have to disagree. It would have been ducking and would have looked like ducking. He took on the challenge knowing how dangerous Poonsawat was an fair play to him for that. The biggist complaint in boxing today is that the best don't fight the best. Bernard Dunne need have no regrets.

 

Don't think that fight is happening. He had to pull out of the EU Title fight against Nadjib Mohammedi last month due to injury and it sounds like he wont be back until 2011

I don't see Sweeney fighting anytime soon. He showed me a nasty scar on his ankle at the Limerick show and he still had a bit of a limp from his injury. Probably be back out in the New Year.

As for Tony Jeffries, can't see them letting him anywhere near Sweeney....he's ****

Some people might had said that it was a duck, people like us most likely. But the majority of casual fans would have lapped up the banter, hype and bickering between the Brit and the Mick! and bought into it in a big way.

It would have been between for Irish boxing for Dunne to continue winning in my opinion.

No one know Poonsawat, they cared even less about him until the fight was signed, it was a massive error to go through with the fight.

Tolan could be Jeffries worst nightmare. I think Jeffries defence is terrible and Tolan knows how to dig, very interesting fight - it would be great if Tolan streched him out in front a passionate Belfast crowd.
