And? Does that make it right? So you can weigh as light as you want, and still pick up a vacant title at a division or 2 higher? The weight classes are there for a reason...but it's clear the belts mean nothing now anyway. Let's say a Heavyweight title becomes vacant, Pacquiao weighs-in as he did for Margarito...he beats a 220+lb guy...does that make him the Heavyweight champion? Let's say...no wait...Pacquiao will beat Margarito...will he defend his title at the weight he weighed in against Margarito? What's the point in that? Will that title effectively become a Welterweight title?
I'm no expert but by fight night wouldn't Marg be close to 160? I don't like the fact that Pac can weigh 144 and win a middleweight belt but if Marg is at least comfortable by Saturday night then he should be fine, right?
What's the problem? It's not middleweight either. I like the fact that a smaller man can compete with light middleweights.
Look moron, you need to lighten up and cherish the fact that Pac is fighting this guy whom many avoided even at 147 lbs. When Hopkins and Jones were on top of their games, there was endless talks abuot them fighting at a catchweight and everybody was practically begging for them to fight. They did not, mainly because of the purse split and 2ndly abuot the weight at which they will meet. In the end, the fight never materialised until almost a decade later when both of them were shot as hell. At least Pac is compromising and is willing to meet somewhere in the middle. He could have just said 147 lbs or nothing. I guess you would have been happier with that??
Not against Catch-weights...against Catch-weights for World Titles...even more against Catch-weights for Vacant World Titles, never mind not even weighing within the weight class range. Looking forward to good bout...not a World Title bout in my eyes though.
I'm surprised at what I'm reading today. A lot of people seem to not have a clue about boxing and certain fights in the past. The weight classes are there to protect fighters from heavier opponents. If a fighter choses to come in lighter, he's able to, if he feels that he can deal with it. It has happened many times in the past.
Because the other guy has to work harder to make weight. LMW/MW...whatever...it's still NOT a welterweight fight, yet Pac can fight at 140ish and STILL win a title in a different weight class. Why not have a separate title for catchweight fights? That makes more sense to me, rather than give a small guy a LMW belt when he didn't make the conventional weight limit at 154. I'm not sure why the powers that be let him get away with it.
I'm not talking about the past, and even then i would, and have probably said it's not right. Still doesn't make a good argument for why a World Title should be on the line.
I think that title is BS, but Margarito weighed in within the light middleweight limit. 148-154. I don't like the catch weights, but Margarito had no problem with it like you do.
The reason divisions and catchweights are made is to put man of similar size against each other to make it more fair and not have huge guys vs small ones. If someone wants to come in lighter, it's on them. It would only matter if the other guy had to magically drain to the others new weight. But obviously it doesn't happen...
I have no problem with catch-weights unless there is a title on the line. This is a catch-weight bout with a title on the line, with one competitor weighing in as a Welterweight...and the other not allowed to weigh-in at the maximum weight limit for the vacant Light Middleweight title. "If" the Welterweight wins, and he weighs in to defend said title at the same weight he did to claim said title...it is effectively a Welterweight title. Let's say Williams was to face Pascal after Martinez. Pascal agrees to a catch-weight of 171lbs, Williams weighs in at 165lbs...Williams wins, does that make Williams the Light Heavyweight champion? Would he defend said title at 165lbs whilst it was still the Light Heavyweight title?
The other guy can get a junior middleweight title by fighting a 140ish guy. Not mentioning being caught cheating. Margo is ATG unfortunate boxer.atschatschatsch
