"A Man Among Men"(Jeffries bio) by Kelly Richard Nicholson. A great read. The author goes into the funny, post-battles friendship between Jeff and Bob Fitzsimmons, which is really funny. Jeff, the strong and silent type and Fitz, the bumbly and gregarious type, make a great pair(try and imagine Sonny Liston and Steve Irwin [the croc hunter] going on hunting/fishing trips together). "Ultimate Tough Guy" is a good Jeff bio as well. The Paxton Greb bio and Moyle Langford bio I cannot recommend highly enough. Absolutely indespensible for any boxing library. Also the painstakingly-researched, ten-years-in-the-making Harry Greb bio by Steve Compton....oh wait!.... (kiddin Steve. Just giving you a push...:smoke)
My All time Favorites: The Fight - Norman Mailer The Sweet Science - AJ Libling I also recommend the Langford (Moyle) and Greb (Paxton) books. Teddy Atlas' book is a good read. Very entertaining. 'The Big If' about Johnny Owen, Lupe Pintor, their careers and their tragic fight is a Great book.
LOL..Dempsey would have had nothing to worry about at all..at point Johnson was journymen quaility at best.
not really putting johnson down....just at that point Johnson would stand no chance..but that documentary made it sound like dempsey was scarred shitless...thats all... but yea...ill have to check out the book sometime.
EMPIRE of DECEIT:good Remember Howard Smith anyone!! MAPS (Muhammad Ali Proffesional Sports) & the Wells Fargo $21million fraud, awesome read about how Howard Smith appeared on the scene & near on took over boxing. It's by the 2 FBI agents who broke the case...Dean Allison & Bruce B Henderson & absolutly riviting + the unproven allegations that nearly all the champs of the day were given massive sacks of cash to agree to unification fights in all divisions over one massive weekend of boxing at MSG all financed out of the bank that Howard had made his own Great piece on Jim Watt & Mickey Duff getting $200K in a paper bag which of course they denied
I wish there were more boxing books. I would love it if Hagler or Hearns or anyone wrote books which talked about how they felt before certain fights and all that. I would read them all, but there are not many.
the jackie turpin book is very good, you will love it. As well as it being jackie's story you get a real feeling for what kind of person randy and the other turpins realy were - a real rough, tough willd bunch but good as gold. jackie was the most stable of the brothers. he fought at a much lower level but was very active and capable fighter.
