It's March 1987 and WBC heavyweight champion Mike Tyson takes on WBA heavyweight champion James "Bonecrusher" Smith at the Las Vegas Hilton. As we all know, this was one of the worst heavyweight bouts in history, with Smith clutching and spoiling his way to the final bell.

Despite his pre-fight boasts, Smith certainly didn't set out to flatten Tyson when the first round began. Fans were expecting fireworks when these two huge punchers clashed but in the first round Smith was clearly wary and boxed cautiously, keeping Iron Mike at arms length. Early in the second round, Smith got cut and after that he turned into a human octopus and constantly hugged Tyson like he was his woman!

However, with just 20 seconds remaining in the 12th and final round, Smith suddenly saw an opening and launched a right hand. Tyson was stopped in his tracks and Smith quickly followed up. But it was too late and the bell rang to end this dismal fight.

But the question is this; if Smith was able to stun Tyson in the closing seconds of the last round, what would have happened if he had opened up like that in the first round? At the time, Tyson was considered to be just about unbeatable but of course we subsequently found out that he could be hurt and knocked out.

If Smith had gone out looking for a KO from the start could he have scored a sensational stoppage?

I remember Tyson swayed a little, but I am not sure he was really hurt badly. I think the same thing would have happened. Mike would have regrouped and landed on Bonecrusher and James would have clinched. I think James saw that the round was over and threw that punch for that reason. That was a round 12 punch for some reason.

Hard to imagine an scenario where Smith manages to seriously hurt Tyson... Sure, we can always imagine an scenaro where Smith gets lucky and lands a killer shot.. but that is streching the imagination a little

In fact I think the opposite is the most credible scenario: an aggresive Smith let his defence down and is cracked by Mike

Had Smith gone agressively for Mike from the 1st round on, that means that he would have been forced to be a lot less cautious, and therefore more prone to be hurt by Mike

So... in a nutshell: with an agressive Smith the most probably outcome would have been a stoppage .... but it would have been Smith the one stopped :)

Smith definately had the power to hurt Tyson, but he also gassed a lot, so if he went all out, he may have even knocked Mike down, but it took a lot to take him out. I don't think Bonecrusher's had the stamina to outlast Mike.

The BoneCrusher should have changed his name to Turtle in this fight. He was afraid of Tyson the whole fight. If he opened up and went after Tyson he would have probably got knocked out but I would have had a lot more respect for Smith.

Firstly It was a last minute hail mary punch because Smith knew the fight was over
and secondly it only caught Tyson unaware because Mike had been chasing Bonecrusher for the past 12 rounds and he didnt really expect it, if hed have opened up sooner, Mike would have took him out.

Smith had enough power to hurt just about anyone, but finishing them was another story. Marvis Frazier, Jessie Ferguson and Jose Ribalta were all stunned or even floored by Smith, yet all managed to go the distance. Tyson was a notch above these guys in almost every department, and while a more aggressive and confident Bonecrusher might have made it an interesting fight, I don't know if I can see him sealing the deal.

    I agree.

Bonecrusher hurt & dropped Ruddock too, but got KO'd himself.
If Smith had brought the balls to slug with Tyson, he'd have been sparked.

Bruno & Ruddock punch as hard as Bonecrusher & they managed to stun Tyson in his 4 fights with them, but couldn't come close to finishing him, as that requires a sustained & brutal beatdown.

Good point, the bomb you don't see coming, always hurts the most.

Tyson is a quality example of this, with his "make them miss, make them pay" timed counter bombs, which once made him so devestating.

Smith finished Spoon but it was nothing special looking. That kind of wild crap would have never worked against Tyson.

I dont really blame Smith for the performance, remember Tyson had just destroyed Berbick, if u were Smith, what would you have done?

the funny part was where Tyson slipped over and Smith jizzed his pants because he thought it was a KD

    Indeed,

Smith had plenty of raw power, but what he lacked was skill. Joe Louis for example was one of the best finishers of all time, not because he was a huge hitter, but due to the fact that he had excellent timing and a wide array of well polished punches that he used at the right moment. James did not have this.
