It's hard to find a person in boxing who's more humble and respecful than Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez, but he shows none of that in the ring when it's about putting on a show and displaying skills. He gave everything he got against Paul Williams the first time around in a fight on short notice, and said you know what? I respect the judges outcome and learn from my mistakes to do better if a rematch ever comes.

Sportsmanship and good character pays off long term, he got the chance vs Kelly Pavlik and took it, and here he is facing Paul Willims again in another huge task, not only gunning for a clear victory to retain the World MW Championship, but to get the prestigeous Fighter of the Year award. Not since Glen Johnson was there a fighter who got the award coming from the 'outside', however Maravilla getting that W is far from being a foregone conclusion. Willams still has the advantages in size and output, and this time around both are having a full camp, so expect something different yet similar to their awesome first fight - the match-up of 2011 is finally just days away!

Good luck Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez. What a gentleman, what a story!

Agree, I would like to recognize his community work. He opened that house in california for women victims of domestic violence. I believe he did that with part of the money he got from the Pavlik fight. Also the huge improvement in the ring since the Margarito fight. He is a true champion inside and outside the ring.

 Some funny reactions Sergio Martinez' looks bring out of some people. 'Make him his woman'? 'Maravilla would like it'? Sounds like you're projecting Your wishes here buddy.

    This was back in April

    http://freesportsmagazine.com/2010/04/martinez-proud-to-be-a-momma’s-boy/

    This was back in April.

“I love and respect women. Violence against women is simply unacceptable. The great number of cases, too often involving athletes, requires action. I have always confided in my mother and consider myself to be a momma’s boy. Women must be respected, not abused,” Martinez commented recently. He is making this his cause, using his new found fame as middleweight champion of the world to help deliver this important message.
Sergio Martinez has plans to start a foundation for women who have been victims of domestic abuse. His actions are a breath of fresh air in a brutal sport where athletes mostly lookout for themselves. Martinez’s actions are already creating a positive buzz in the boxing community. Respected promoter Lou DiBella said he would try to work with the Boxing Promoter’s Association to help further the cause.
Realistically speaking, domestic violence is probably a more common problem amongst professional fighters than the public thinks. Competing in professional sports requires a level of aggression that is not easily found in the common person. Sergio Martinez is to be applauded for his efforts to help women affected by this horrible problem. He is not looking the other way this time and the world of boxing would be wise to follow his lead.

What a great guy this dude is...Pretty weird that another Argentine middlleweight champ from the past was the polar opposite when it came to this issue...
