:rofl ****in nutter:nut Ray's on ABC with Howard Cossel & admits he was stunned by Duran's speed of counter & speed of foot as Cossel said to Ray "Duran stopped your lateral movement Ray did'nt he! & Ray replied YES
Duran is a great fighter, but in no way do I think the rematch was hard for Ray. He was cruised and like he said he had fun in there. Ray was starting to land punches to the head and body against Duran in 7 and then round 8, and that is when Duran quit. It was not due to Ray humiliating Duran, he was starting to get hit clean and he knew a knockout was coming. In a way that shows Duran's brilliance to get hit a few punches, and know what would be coming later in the fight. Ray could punch and Duran knew it. I don't think Duran knew the real Ray from their first fight. This Ray surprised him and showed how great Ray really was. Speed and angles were Duran's achilles heel. Not many guys exploited that in him, but the greats did Hearns,Leonard,Benitez. And also, Duran fought at 154 as far back as 1978, before those 3 ever fought there.
By that point I don't think Ray had a choice. His pride was at stake, and Duran also had the momentum. Duran was not as fast as Ray. Ray had the speed advantage and the sharp punching advantage. The punching power I would give to Duran, but if Duran cannot land it in the rematch how does that help him. The fact is the first fight showed Ray that even when he fought Duran's fight, Duran still couldn't stop him. So if Ray boxed, how was Duran going to stop him. It was a matter of Duran making Ray fight again, but he couldn't in the rematch. If he was dominant over Ray he would have forced Ray to fight his fight no matter what Ray did. Ray was the one who could fight two ways and decided how he would fight. Duran's fight was to fight with Ray. Ray was the deciding factor.
"The real ray". That is such bull****. That's as much bull**** as people making excuses for Duran coming in fat for Benitez, Leonard II, etc... There's absolutely nothing objective in it. Leonard came into the fight in fine shape. He tried to box but got swarmed, had his ring cut, and was forced to infight. That was the "real" Ray Leonard. He might have been intimidated by Duran's mind games but that's his own ****ing fault.
You know full well the history of the build up to the 2nd fight with it's farcical overtones of getting Duran into the ring for $9MILLION as fast as possible seeing he'd was fat as a pig. Just name me or show me one fight by Leonard where he adopted those tactics in New Orleans........YOU WONT FIND ONE WILL YOU & YOU KNOW THAT!!!!!!!!! Leonard never BOXED in New Orleans as you put it SRL style as it was alien to him to fight any other way. In New Orleans he was a pertified rabbit in the headlights & fled the scene of fair & honorable fistic battle by adopting a safty 1st measure against a weight ****ed duran who took the $9million & bugged out & for you to claim that it was a superb case of boxing excellence on Leonards part is frankly pathetic. Leonard was mentally dominated by Duran & always will be as when it really mattered & all things being equal & a fair & level playing field Duran handed Leonard his arse in Montreal:deal
Pac would easily be lured into a brawl with Duran, and thats when he's ****ed...Pac isnt gonna be doing what Ray was dong in the rematch against Duran, and he sure as **** doesnt have the defensive abilities of a Benitez...Duran at his best at 147 beats up Pacquaio. End of story.
Don't know about that, but the IBRO who are boxing researchers make this list a few years ago of the all time great p4p fights and Duran was ranked 7th. http://www.ibroresearch.com/?p=463
People overrate Duran to an incredible extent on here. No ****in doubt he was an incredible fighter but to say he just turns up and walk through Pac is ****in ridiculous. Pac late stoppage.
Thats fair enough. I have no problem with people ranking duran top 7 or whatever. Personally i'd have him around 12-15. I just feel that Pacquiao under roach is something to behold and if he was to fight and beat mayweather (no given obviously) then he has a very real claim to be p4p atg number 1.
