Or are people forgetting this anomaly on Pac's otherwise legendary record?

Is he the Jermaine Taylor to Pacquiao's Bernard Hopkins?

    Thoughts?

Although I've not given it much thought, his achievements/displays are more impressive to me than Barrera's and Morales'.

Sorry but I must disagree, no way are his achievements better than Barrera or Morales. I have all of his fights (bar his first 10) on dvd and know a lot about him. His best results in his career are a loss and a draw to Pacquiao. Whatever you fell the true result was that is a great performance. However Pacquiao improved from the Diaz fight onwards, before the Manny who beat Marquez was the one who lost to Morales. Apart from that he has a good win over Casamayor (who was coming of a good win but showed in his next fight he was well past his best) and Diaz. Apart from that he beat Juarez (who all top fighters dispatch) Jaca and Derrick Gainer. He lost close fights to Chris John and Freddie Norwood.

He is unusual for Mexicans as he has become more aggressive as he has aged. His early fights tended to have minimal contact and while he often knocked his opponent out it was worse than watching a Klitschko fight. This aggressive style makes him much more excited and gets him noticed more. Technically his skills are definatly great but his resume is not deep enough for me. Morales has wins over Barrera, Pacquiao, Jones, Mcculough eetc. Barrera has wins over Morales, Hamed, Mckinney etc. Skillwise he has evreything at this part in his career except perhaps the ability to end of a hard hitting puncher ala Katsidis. A win over Katsidis would be great for his resume but it would not surprise me if he lost. Great fighter but a notch below his fellow amigos IMO.

Thanks a lot I appreciate it :good. Its a shame we didn't see him against people like Morales and Hamed but people don't realise how much his style has changed since then. He was so technically proficient it was weird to see a young Mexican fight like that. Its interesting that he changed his style right after the John loss. He got $32,000 to fly to Indonesia, lose a controversial decision and all of this after a mega bout against a rising Manny Pacquiao. He must have realised his style was not marketable and you could see it straight away in his next fight in America he sped evreything up. Still £20 for 50 odd fights in his career set is very good. I'm sure the Julio Cesar Chavez career set im ordering for christmas will have much more excitement in it though.

Very good post and I'm now inclined to agree. I think he's at Morales and Barrera standard as far as talent goes, but his resume does lack a signature win or two. Both Marquez's are good technicians, but they get hit far too much to dominate like other greats.

Some good stuff :good. Maybe I should take the time out to observe their careers in more detail, before settling with a definite opinion.

Nothing to expand on really, which is why I said I've not given it much thought.

You said Marquez's achievements are more impressive to you than Barrera's and Morales'.

    Why?

Very good taste then:smooch. I've seen his major fights against Taylor 1, Rosario, Mayweather, Haugen and Camacho but not much else. A guy who is described as someone who 'leads with his chin and follows with a left hook to the body' (I love a good body puncher) must be one exciting fighter. On average how competitive would you say his title fights are? I also have Mosley's career set and I got sick to death of him at Lightweight impersonating a wrecking ball, there is only so much enjoyment I can get from a one sided fight.

I guess it’s probably because Marquez’s late surge is more fresh in my mind than the exploits of Barrera and Morales. Like I said, it's something which I've not settled with a concrete opinion on.

I think he's the best Mexican boxer of all-time. If not then he's on his way with another solid victory.

the greatest mexican fighter of this generation, if he goes on to beat katsidis and conquer 140 then he could be the greatest mexican fighter ever.

people don't give him credit because he was around when morales and barrera were at their best but the fights with them were never made at their prime, personally i think he wanted them fights but politics got in the way. rumour has it that naz was kept away from marquez, in the naz camp they rated marquez a better fighter than barrera.
