After watching the fight, and of course being in complete shock after the result (Martinez deserves credit - Fighter of the year IMO), the spectactular one punch knockout Martinez bestowed upon Williams got me thinking: Could the first fight with Williams have badly effected and ultimately decreased Paul's punch resistance? I ask because in the fist fight, Martinez landed a very similar left hand to the one that put Williams to sleep last night, yet this one spun William's head back and that was teh extent of the damage done. Now in this fight, little over 4 minutes in, Sergio lands this same left hand, but much to our surprise it put's Paul out for the count. Now I am not taking anything away from Martinez, but was Paul's punch resistance not at it's best following thier first war in 2009, in which both fighters (especially Paul) took some huge shots? Even against Cintron, Paul's legs were buckling when Cintron landed hard shots. But ultimately, I think if Sergio lands that punch in the first fight, it doesn't knock Williams out. What is your view?
I doubt it, Williams was never really wobbled in the first one beyond the first knock down, from which he recovered fine and ate more blows throughout. Martinez also took his share of punches, and I don't think he was overly effective. This KO might affect his future punch resistance, but it seems people only get their chin cracked from a bomb or a war with wobbles in it.
That is sort of my point. Williams ate huge bombs in the first fight, but 36 whole minutes of them was bound to affect him physically. Then Martinez lands a few of these similar bombs, and they put Paul out for the count. I will try and find a video, but Martinez lands that exact same left hand in the first fight, and it just bounces of Pauls chin. 12 months later, and the same shot knocks Paul out.
Punisher has NO CHEEN just kidding... Paul has taken hell of a lot punches at his young career.. some of them pretty hard punches. IMO Paul has sounded little bit Punc Drunk quite a while:-(
jus one of those things, perfect punch landed.. kinda like tarver jones 2... if a 3rd fight is made who knows...
I too have noticed Paul sounds a little PD when speaking. This KO is not going to make that any better :-(.
I know what your getting at, but Roy was badly drained and dehydrated from muscle loss. Paul was as far as I know not affected by weight at all going in to this bout.
It was a perfectly accurate and well timed blow, would have put a lot of middleweights to sleep that night. But my point is Martinez landed a very similar nearly identical blow in the first fight, that clearly had less of an effect on Williams.
No, but the two big shots he ate at the end of the 1st definately did. It's one thing to get stopped; anyone can KO anyone at this level, but to get so KTFO that you don't even get your arms out; I think Martinez is way inside his head now. Williams will be OK, but he is probably done with Martinez now.
Nah, I think the punch that KO'd was just right on the money, hopefully his chin won't get permanently dented after the fight, with his style he needs a pretty sturdy beard
That was my main concern. We didn't really get to see if the first fight took anything out of him since he only had 4 rounds before Kermit took a leap. We saw Martinez seemed great still after the Pavlik fight. Hard to tell for sure though because it was such a perfect shot. I thought Paul was looking better boxing wise than the first fight until the huge KO.
This was such a perfect punch you can't really say. No guy should be eating a shot that clean and to go down from it? It is what it is. I hope this teaches him to care a bit more about defense. Fight tall and let it go in the later rounds. He was so focused on hitting he got hit. Martinez threw that shot three times. Each time getting closer and closer.
Paul won't improve until he get's some new trainers. Peterson loves Paul, but he doesn't seem able to maximise Paul's attributes. I too noticed Martinez throwing the left hook, and new at some point that flush shot would hit Paul. But I did not think it would knock him out, that thought didn't even cross my mind. I wish Williams the best, and hope he recovers mentally and physically (if that is even possible), but I hope he doesn't make his layoff too long. He doesn't want to ruin his career.
