I am a big Paul Williams fan, some people say he was overated but i believed he was genuinly feared and his style is exciting, and to be honest i NEVER saw this coming not in a million years. I thought he would win this fight by UD and look brilliant doing so. I liked the idea of him being the middleweight champ and then going back down to face either mayweather or pacquiao. That will not happen now and im genuinly upset for him. I was definatly on the big paul bandwagon and its just derailed spectacularly. How the **** could this happen? It was a bad bad knockout, he didnt know what day it was. I know he has his detractors on ESB but is anyone else a little wounded by this? And where does Williams go next? This is a serious setback and a very bad loss. He was wiped the **** out. So what does he do now? I hope this doesnt ruin him
Like I posted earlier, man.. I put down quite a healthy bet on Martinez, but I couldn't fully enjoy that knockout. I was stunned, almost disgusted. Paul Williams is a good man and a great addition to boxing, this may just put a dent in his career and potentially even ruin it as a whole. You know, guys like Paul Williams makes boxing stand up, he takes on the best challenges out there and does not ***** and moan. This was regular HBO even though their first fight was a mega blast.
step 1 = take a LONG break step 2 = hire a new trainer step 3 = learn some damn D step 4 = fight a bum step 5 = fight a bum step 6 = fight a decent yet over the hill guy (w/o serious power) if steps 4 and 5 go well step 7 = if you get to step 6, and it goes as planned, take a challenge, and get your career going again
he was certainly built up to be the next big thing, but now i guess he has to really rebuild his career from the bottom. its going to be tough to come back from a loss like that, reminds me of spinks when he was being touted as the next opponent for floyd ( he , zab and floyd where about the same in terms of stardom then), and then got starched by zab, or even zab himself by tszyu. it happens to the best of them. but to come back from a shot like that, i mean the confidence is NEVER the same after something like that.
your both right. But its not just a loss, its a ****ing devastating loss by 2 round KO FACE FIRST LEAVING ON A STRETCHER type ****. What the ****:-( Lets be honest...it could ruin him
Williams is a good fighter but his defence is a riot. Martinez won the first fight as well IMO. He is far more versatile and technically gifted.
Williams is too slight to be a middleweight. He needs to stick to one weight and try to do well at that weight, which should be JW. Paul has the same problems as fighters like Judah and Berto have; they consider changing trainers as disloyal. Sometimes you have to make a change to get ahead. Williams has taken a lot of big shots in his career. Maybe that was all well and good at 147, but he's a string-bean with a string-bean neck. He needs defense in his life. Williams has been fighting the wrong style his whole career. With a body like his, he should be boxing, and keeping guys at the end of his punches. If any boxer would benefit from a business with Manny Steward, it would be Williams. It's always sad when you see a fearless warrior go out like that. He walked into that punch.
lotta that going around :deal i agree. the reality is, w/ williams's athleticism, height, etc...he shouldnt be touched at all during a fight. he doesnt fight tall, has no jab, cannot control distance for ****, has zero defense... athleticism and physical attributes cannot be taught. but what is wrong w/ williams can be taught. that's not to say its too late to teach this old dog new tricks but he has so much he can work on if he really wants too.
Boxing needs guys like PW, he is willing to face anybody and puts on an exciting show everytime. I don't understand where all this PW hate is coming from, he isn't trash talking fighters left right and centre yet some posters seem to want to kick him while he's down? The best scenario is to take some time off, get a new trainer and rebuild his career. I seriously doubt he'll fight the same way (all guns blazing), but this could be a good thing if he can learn how to properly use his height and set up punches.
I've never seen a boxer not utilise such big advantages to the LEAST of his advantage. Leaping in with his shots, not using distance and the jab to his full avantage. Absolutely terrible. He needs a new trainer and NOW otherwise he can forget his career, for the long-term anyway.
Williams always been extremely overrated specially by his two fans with their "most feared fighter in boxing" rhetoric and the comparisons with Tommy Hearns. With that being said Williams is a good kid and i whish him well.
It's sad because Zab never learned to make a change, and Williams has learned the hard way that he needs to change his style and trainer. Next up is Berto, I hope he doesn't wait until something bad happens before he makes a change. Pavlik needs to do the same and get a professional corner.
I don't think Williams is overrated. He has the talent and the body to dominate at 154, but he is too slight and doesn't have the muscle to be dominant at 160. If he changes his style, he can compete at 160, but I'd like to see him dominate at 154.
