I was just wondering in light of the PW ko, it seems everyone knew he wasn't getting up, so in that case does the ref need to count or should he break it and call for help just for the sake of the fighter. I mean PW was no way responsive to the ref

Yeah, the ref f**ked that up. There was no need for him to go through the full count.

Some refs do it just to be accurate or complete sometimes. A guy like Richard Steele used to wave it off and take the mouthpiece out of the fighters mouth. Although when Hearns knocked out Shuler, Steele did the full count over him.

Probably to shut up ESB idiots that'll say...Williams could have gotten up! Williams should have gotten a count! Blah Blah. I don't think there was a need, but after getting knocked out like that I don't think 10 seconds is going to be life and death. If anything that's 10 seconds to wake up.

Is the ref completing a full 10-count the difference between a KO and a TKO?

Yes. That's exactly why. Martinez earned a straight KO. That's why the referee completed the count. If the referee waves it off before completing a 10-count, it's a TKO.

In fairness its not like the ref could see PWs eyes .... hard for him to tell if the guy is completely gone or not.
Then again considering the sound of the punch id be more worried checking if the guy was still alive instead of counting.

Yeah, with Williams laying there eyes wide open looking dead, that seemed surreal watching the ref counting.

What happened wasn't scripted you know, Williams went down in shocking fashion so the referee counts and this time he went all the way. It just happened all of a sudden it's normal for the referee's reaction to be slightly different and he was normal here.

Yes, just look at all the people who think Jacobs could've continued. Might as well count to be sure. It's not always obvious if the knockdown is definitive.

KOs are rare nowadays. So ****ing what if the fighter can't get up? Count to 10 so the winner gets credited for a straight KO win. Pac's win over Hatton should've been ruled a KO but the ref didn't bother counting so it was ruled a TKO instead. I guess refs just don't want to look like idiots counting for no reason.
