Tunny did outbox Jack Dempsey who was a Marciano type of fighter but Dempsey was slowing down and coming off a long lay off when they met. Could he outbox the roc? Maybe he could but if Rocky caught him on the ropes it could be all over. Could go either way.

    Tunney W 10 Marciano.

    Marciano KO 12 Tunney..

It all depends on the limit contracted...

    Nice match-up

Tunney has the durability to stay away from Rocky the entire fight. Dempsey could only do great damage against Tunney because of that freakish leap hook. Marciano can't do that move. I don't think he reaches Tunney, but I do think he makes him work even harder than he did against Dempsey.

I always debated this one in my mind and I can't choose a clear winner. If Rocky wins it has to be by ko. No way he outboxes Tunney to a decision as Gene is one of the best scientific boxers the game has ever seen and very tough as well so ko is the only way as far as I see it. With that being said the question is whether or not Rocky will. He certainly could but would he? I don't think so. Tunney was mobile and tough with quick hands and a good punch as well as a great boxing brain. The Dempsey that Gene beat was probably faster than Rocky was at his best (though not better) and Gene boxed circles around him and won every round but one in thier two fights. Even against a past it Dempsey that's remarkable. Gene could take it as well. My guess is put the 2 of them in a match at thier very best and Tunney takes it on points in a hard fought battle. Rocky would have his moments and shake Tunney more than a few times but Tunneys legs keep him out of real trouble and carry him to a decision.

Harry Mathews would disagree with you about Marciano's leaping hook.

Why does Marciano need to ko Tunney for the win?

I belive Marciano can also win by out swarming him and getting a points victory that way. Still a close fight, I can see it either way.

He caught Walcott a few times with the leap hook.

Louis got caught with it, and I belive the first punch vs Charles II was the leaping hook. Now non of these were ko or knockdown blows, but Marciano did have the leap hook.

Difference between Marciano and Dempsey is that Marciano was a strong finisher and I think his relentless pressure gets to the fading Gene as the fight goes on. Harry Matthews was a mover and Roland Lastarza but relentless Rocky them. I think Tunney was stronger and better than those 2 but the result would be the same with Marciano coming on and getting to Gene with body shots and a late finish bringing it up to the head.

Harry Matthews was a beanbole light heavy who very few took seriously as a heavyweight contender. I believe Archie Moore pretty much called him a fraud. He was a non-entity. Lastarza wasn't far behind in that status.

Tunney is a big step up from the likes of Matthews and LaStarza. Gene was a champion. These 2 weren't. Beating those 2 is no barometer as to how Marciano would do against Tunney who was more mobile and alot tougher as well as a harder puncher than both.

Not sure on that, on Film, Willard and Firpo just keep getting up.

Marciano on film was able to put Louis, Walcott, Layne and Matthews away when the hammer came.

  14. marciano was a bit stronger than dempsey but dempsey was much faster with feet and hands, marciano might not catch tunney. he would be
    outboxed

    lol good call

While thats true, Marciano hit Matthews with two left hooks that messed him up seconds before, while Dempsey was chasing down a quick Tunney

But point taken, I spoke too fast :)
