Why didn't Williams tighten up his defense against that left hand?

In his first bout against Martinez, Paul began to neutralize the right hand of Martinez by the middle of the fight. By the 10th round, however, Martinez began hitting him with that exact same left hand that knocked him out cold in their rematch. You can clearly see Paul's head being snapped back in their first fight from that same punch.

How could he or his trainer not see that and close up that gap? You can tell Martinez was aiming that left hand the entire second round.

Paul doesn't have the best ring IQ. They seem to over emphasize fitness in Paul's training camps.

Really makes you wonder how a third fight would go against Quintana. Would it be their first fight all over again?

It seems like Paul's trainer is limited in what he can teach Paul, but Paul is very loyal to his trainer. They have a father/son type of relationship. Mr.Peterson even taught him how to invest in real estate.

I totally agree. I can't believe his corner did not tell him to keep his hands up and to stay outside or move in and out. he was walking around w/ his hand below his chin for gigantic clips at a time. When i re watched I listened to see what they said and it was nothing to fix what u said.

Hopefully he learns quicker in investing

And Quintana got destroyed by Berto earlier this year.

Well, I never in a million years expected to see Martinez knock Williams out cold that way. I did, however, always wonder what would happen when Williams would face an opponent with one punch knockout power because Williams isn't the hardest target to fight. A fight between Williams & Kirkland would be awesome.

Just hard to believe they didn't see that when you can clearly tell Martinez was hunting for that shot.

If you go back to the rbr thread I specifically said before the fight that Pwill had better adapt to that martinez lower the head and throw the left over the top, Bhop does the same exact move except with his right. What happened? the exact same thing as last fight and williams did not adapt and sm landed a beauty.

Really Pwill has been getting by on his tremendous punch volume and his good chin, apparently it couldnt last forever. IMO Pwill needs a more professional trainer who can transform him into a more ranged dedicated fighter.

Yes I mean isn't that the essence of a great cornerman ? and his trainer is well respected. strange as hell.

PW is all about keeping his hands moving, I couldn't believe he was getting hit by those leaping punches in the first Martinez fight. You'd think his team would have learned something from that. I always thought he was a candidate for getting KTFO at any time if his beard didn't hold up and he didn't make some changes, but I didn't think Sergio had the power to make it happen.

Can't do something you're not capable of.

He also got hit moving forward with a dominant hand counter with Martinez's entire bodyweight thrown into it. It happens.

Seems to me the essence of the corner is to say things along these lines:

    "Have some water baby"

    "You're blowing it!"

"We can recoup, we can recoup, let's recoup!"

*punches wildly at the air* "bap bip bop buah ah!! Let your hands go Zab"

"Roy!"...this is particularly effective if your fighters name is John.

Haha, well I think Paul is certainly capable of keeping his right hand up. However he just has a lot of bad habits that didn't get fixed.

If Kessler was able to move his head a little against Froch and use bodywork, things he hasn't done in years, I think Paul can change but he has to work on it, it won't magically happen.
