Met Leon Spinks and Juan Lazcano. Leon I met at a boxing match and just took a quick picture together as he was walking away, so not much interaction. Juan was at a gym I was at for a while, was a nice guy.
I have had the privilege to talk to Antonio Escalante at the Don Haskins after he fought Locke on FNF (last year), and then this year I was able to talk to Sharif Bogere after his fight as well. Both really cool guys.
Thats great. People say boxers are always ten times nice than they expected. I hear that so often how cool they are when u meet them in person
Sugar Ray Leonard Ricky Hatton Evander Holyfield Joe Calzaghe Frank Bruno Spencer Oliver Richie Woodhall All were really amiable, nice guys. Holyfield was at a book signing but had hurt his hand so wasn't actually signing any books! Gay.
Derek Chisora but this was wayy back like in 06. Seemed like a cool dude Danny Williams, really nice guy and polite
I've met, "Sugar" Shane Mosley, Mike Sedillo, Jorge Paez, Francisco "Panchito" Bojado, Paul Gonzales, Genaro "Chicanito" Hernandez, and Bridgett "Baby doll" Riley. All were cool and very approachable.
Trevor Whitman (Trainer)- Began training with him starting in 2000 while I would visit my Dad in Denver. Was one of his first students. Very very nice man, treated me like a brother. Was a trainer for Rashad Evan's camp on the UFC's TUF. Verno Phillips- Was trained by Trevor at the time, nice guy. By the time he fought Paul Williams he was on the slide. JC Candelo- Wasn't trained by Trevor, but would often spar and train with Verno. Good man. Hector Camacho- Met him in 2000 or 2001 in Denver through Trevor, whenever his rematch with Duran was. Hit the bags and watched him do a little bit of training and sparring a few weeks before that fight. Nice guy, would dance on the treadmil to loud music and sing a lot during his warmup. Erik Morales- Had an autograph signed and picture taken with him in 2000 when he fought Kevin Kelley here in El Paso. Autograph reads "Para Chris, es un amigo, Erik Morales". Antonio Escalante- Starting boxing at San Juan gym here in EP when I was in middle school. Moved with my team to The Carolina Center after a few years. Really, humble guy, still would recognize me if we crossed paths even though it has been about five years. Caesar Lopez- Was on my team while he was an amateur, another nice guy. Ron Lyle- Trained with him and had a couple of amateur bouts from 06-07, very smart man. Huge and still muscular for a guy around 70. Fernie Morales Sr.- Would have been El Paso's first world titilist had he won a split decision back in the 80's. Nice guy, good man, his son is about my age, and was a pretty good amateur, but I don't think he ever turned pro.
mayweather jr, mike tyson, bernard hopkins, auggie sanchez. tyson loved my boxing collage which was all black and white pictures of most of the all time greats including his picture of course. Hopkins asked why isn't my picture in there man? my response was because i couldn't find a black and white picture of you in any boxing publication, lol. i almost didn't get my collage autographed because of the long line, they screamed thats it for today sorry, but one of his bodyguards saw it and said come on man tyson is going to wanna see this he loves this kind of stuff and sure enough i was the last one. one of his manager who sitting next to him wanted to buy it from me after tyson signed it but i said no thanks, took me three months to complete it. hopkins went into a conference room so i went over and asked one of the two guys standing in front of the door if he could take my collage over to hopkins to have it signed he said wait here for a moment why i take it to him, about a minute and a half later he comes out without it and tells me bernard told me to tell you to come in. i go inside and he is standing there alone he asks is this yours and i said yes and then that's when he asks hey man how come my picture is not in here?.
