They tried to hook him up with a painting job, but he turned it down.

It's not the highest paying job in the world, but he would be able to keep a roof over his head.

the article states about the luxuries, block parties, etc. but it also says that he was a drop out. so he really didn't have knowledge of how to invest his money all he knew was how to spend it and get used by people

Definitely feel for the guy, but c'mon the Blade has been crying poor for years now as I seem to recall an article about his struggles like every year or so for the past few and he takes no responsibility. Sure he probably got screwed a fair amount, but a lot of his hard luck has got to be related to making very short sighted decisions when he had money. If he wanted to live it up and blow his money, that's fine but just don't expect others to carry you just because you're an ex-champ. I mean where's his pride? At least get a job doing whatever. With his name someone would give him some type of position if he really wanted to work and earn some type of living. Look at Leon Spinks, the guy was working as a janitor and trying to pay for himself when they did that article about a year ago. He still had enough responsibility to do that. The blade's career has been effectively done for 15 years - he could've got into somehing (be it a trade, constuction) a while ago when his name was still real relevant. Again, feel for the guy, but he's gotta do something (besides fight). If he's mentally ill/totally brain shot, than that's another story and he should collect some SSI/social security disabilty

All that being said, there definitely shoudl be some type of mandatory pension system whereby the fighter and promotoers are forced to pay some of fight proceeds into a savings account to provide for old age given how boxing takes such a toll on just about every fighter (again which might explain a lot of iran's troubles)

Thank you I agree with you 100 percent, the problem is how this cats spend it. I know people that make very little, and live okay, a roof over there head, a decent car, good home cooked meals, dress nice.....Its all on how you spend it.....Some people will make a dollar and spend 2, some will make a dollar and spend $0.50 just the way it is, Which is why some are broke and some aren't

This, I never understood why people would go into debt over some bull**** they don't even need. It's common sense. Using YOUR money to buy an expensive shirt is one thing, but using a credit card for the shirt is another.

Wow. The comments on this thread show you why boxing is the way it is today.

"You need to be more of an action fighter!"

-- After the brain damage of a career of action fighting

"Who cares if you are broke you should have been smarter."

    Wow people. Just wow.

True, but humans are animals. Just like you can poison sugar and end up poisoning the whole ant colony. You can trick humans into instant gratification. If proper money management was "common sense", the world wouldn't be the world it is today. :conf

What I can't for the life of me understand?... is that everything is about waiting for some one to help him, or get him out, like the magical night in shining armor is going to save him. He dosen't seem to take responsibility for any thing that has led him here. Everything thing is about the "What if's" and "what was done to him" come on?.... Give me a ****ing break.....quit feeling sorry for your self and look for work.......You honestly don't think he has had the chance to work for a Gym? a Promotion? a Club? as a Trainer? Holding the ****ing bag? I mean come on.....Even then, he can get a job, he is not a boxer any more.........Get a job, 9-5

Also you don't need an education to know that if you have 1 dollar you shouldn't spend it all.

It's the shock, that keeps someone like Iran from just plainly sinking into the background and being just like the rest of the population.

He was a world-famous champion, had truckloads of money, of course when the **** hit the fan it was more than a little hard to go back to earth. Can anybody imagine what it would feel like when you had the world at the tip of your fingers and then have it all taken away? When all of the sudden you had to work a nine-to-five just to have some crummy dinner and a shithole to sleep in? Sometimes it helps to put yourself in their shoes to understand where they're coming from.

Just stop. If that makes you feel better about saying "F him?" So be it. Don't sugar coat it. "He had more money than me so F him." Crabs in a bucket. Happy to see him in a lower spot than you. Shows you that on some level you are doing it "right". It is what it is man.

If it ain't that hard why don't you try it for a week?

Exactly man. People working 9-5s do it all of the time. Lose their job at 45 and start burning their savings thinking, "I'll just get a new job." when the reality is that they are aged out and will probably never again get the money they once made.

They don't see the writing on the wall until they hit rock bottom. Only then do the see that "It is over." Sad indeed.

I can bet my left nut that Floyd will be broke in the future. Jones on the other hand lives well below his means. He's pretty much a country boy that relaxes by raising his roosters and being in the outdoors. On the documentary right before the Ruiz fight he said he still lives in the first home that he ever purchased (and it's a very modest home).
