In the last few days I've been reading different boxing site articles as I usually do...... I've noticed more over the years that there is less respect now for the fighter that has the balls to climb into a ring and entertain us....... What I'm getting at is that I think its a disrespect to Paul Williams and his family that his picture of him lying on the canvas with his eyes open circulates boxing sites all over the internet. .......and now I'm seeing some of the forum members on this site using that image as their avatar.:-nono Todays media has no respect for the human side of the fighter. I've been a fan for thirty years.....journalist of the past would put a fallen fighter on a newspaper, but it was done a little more tastefully to tell a story. To have for example a picture of a fallen Williams, but with Sergio Martinez in it in celebration, tells a story. ......a head shot of just Williams face on the canvas with his eyes wide open totally out of it, is'nt telling us more than the picture I described previously. Respect for the fighter is all I'm saying. They put there life on the line each time they climb a ring, and we pay them by disrespecting them in that distasteful manner. You dumbnuts with a knocked out Williams face as an avatar, a little more respect please...... ...take those avatars down!:fire
Big words for a guy who's sole reason for existence on this site is to bash Pacquaio. Granted, I agree with you. Paul Williams deserves our respect.
I've never seen divac bash Pacquiao...just insist that he has two losses to Marquez. As for the thread, you're right. The same sophomoric crap keeps popping up (most recently after the Frenkel-Maccarinelli KO). Most boxing fans don't deserve the sport.
I felt the same way when I saw those avatars, but figured this is ESB and it's pointless to say anything about it to a bunch of keyboard macho men. Its guys like Benjamin Linus, what do you expect?
I agree. Also, we don't give ANY fighter credit for a victory. "Paul Williams was best at welterweight", "Martinez landed a lucky punch", "Manny hand picks fighters", "Floyd is too defensive"...The solution is respect for victory and respect for humanity. These well conditioned and dedicated athletes are placing their lives on the line to entertain us and feed their families, respect is minimal.
I dont buy into this "worship fighters cause they put their life on the line", I mean I respect what they do, but im pretty sure they would rather be doing what they are doing than a 9 to 5 job, I suspect many others on here would to, if they could box at that standard. By all means respect them, dont abuse them, but dont suck upto them cause they chose this particularly profession, thats when fighters start using it to their advantage and start giving you low risk, high reward, non competitive fights. Fans need to put pressure on fighters, but there is a way of doing it without abusing them personally.
The only people that so easily call fighters punks, ***s, duckers, cowards and more...are the posters/fans who have NEVER stepped into a ring.
