Floyd and Mosley had the boxing and black fanbases to work with. emmanuel and marg had the boxing, pinoy, and mexican fanbases to work with. Mexicans are "supposedly" the biggest boxing fanbase according to many "boxing experts". What's with all this stuff about how Black fighters aren't draws anyways? Some of Oscar's best numbers were with black people.
So a couple of writers make up a ppv audience? Come on now, this was the most watched 24/7 ever according to HBO. Not to forget Pac was on 60mins. His audience was massive. Good numbers though.
ok. that's why the better comparison shouldl be mayweather-marquez and pac-margarito PPV numbers. both of them had mexican opponents here. but you should also factor in that pac himself is non-american and we are talking about american HBO PPV numbers here.
Yeah, I think almost all the buys were for Pacquiao. No one even cared about Margarito except for the fact that he was so much bigger. No one even brought up his previous destruction by Shane Mosley.
Him not being an American had its own strengths. His fans always talk about how he's supposedly the most internationally known boxer, the face of boxing, the most accomplished boxer, etc. He even had the opportunity to tap into a marketbase that boxers usually don't associate with like 60 Minutes and Senator Reid's political buddies.
These are good numbers and good for the sport. But, these excuses about the fighters being non-american are bull****. Pac is an honorary American, at this point. He's called on by American politicians for face time, he's on 60 minutes, is the major attraction in some of the largest gates in boxing history, has averaged about 1M in PPV, since the ODLH fight, is one of the biggest attractions in Hollywood, FOTD, etc. He has the pulse of the viewing public, and is respected by most. Margarito, on the other hand, is a well known fighter, in the Mexican and Mexican-American communities. Sorry....those excuses don't fly anymore. If there's any reason why his numbers aren't higher it's that, since moving up in weight, he has not fought the right fighter at the right time. This is what Floyd does better than him. Floyd fought ODLH, Hatton, and SSM, when the public perception of them was FAVORABLE (especially Hatton). Manny is fighting them when that perception is not as favorable. They do not look impressive beforehand or are considered shot. The only thing that is making these matchups, financially, viable is the 'David and Goliath' angle. These are more showcase bouts than, actually, great matchups.
On one hand you have some saying the numbers is dismal. And on the other hand there is some who can't believe the numbers being so high he needed sources for solid proof. Why the polarity?
Pac's numbers are great regardless if he's foreign or domestic. It not being higher is relative to Floyd's top numbers. One can argue that in the states at least Floyd may have slightly more name recognition, but the difference is slight enough to be not indicative of who is the actual bigger draw. Like you said each fight has subjective circumstances which affects the final numbers. Hell, it could be that ever since these Pac/***** wars started, I'd venture to say that Floyd has the added benefit of drawing a chunk of the ppv-payin Pac nation eager to see Floyd get humbled. I know I bought the Floyd/Shane fight hoping Shane shuts him up. That and I'm also a longtime Sugar fan.
