As for the OP its been said already but Smith launching that bomb in Round 1 is exactly what Tyson trained for so in all likely hood Smith would have just been another highlight reel.

1 Dimensional fighters don't beat Mike Tyson. You have to so versatility in your attack otherwise its just a matter of time before he catches up to you and stops you. So even if Smith hurt him, it would have shortened the night if he continued to take risks against Mike Tyson.

As a big fan or Tyson and Bonecrusher I have often been curious about the notion of "what if" Smith had went for broke and tried to take Mike out in the way that he did many other former Heavyweight "Belt Holders" like Witherspoon and Weaver.. I think he did have enough power to hurt Mike BUT Tyson was in another league in terms of hand speed and combination punching. In my opinion if Smith did go for broke he would surely land some solid stuff on Mike but I feel as though Tyson would be more then happy to exchange with him and with his edge in speed and his over all superior skills in nearly every area it would spell doom for Smith inside of 5 rounds. But I would have loved to have seen it!!

Louis was all you say, plus a huge hitter, he hit Braddock [pictured] so hard he drove his teeth through his mouthpiece and into his lips.

If Smith had gone for the throat early, he most likely would have been knocked out himself.

A single shot wasn't a danger to young Mike, nor even a succession of them. When Douglas legitimately knocked him out (legitimately, let's agree for the sake of argument...that's a controversy for another day, or a year of Sundays...) it was an accumulation job. Douglas was also just plain better - much better - than Smith.

If Smith had gone all out in round one, he'd have been KO'd by Tyson in that round. Iron Mike was a very fast starter, whereas Mike Weaver was a slow starter, and Tim Witherspoon was woefully out of shape and also having big time disputes with Don King, so his mind was not really on Bonecrusher. Smith, being the college graduate that he is, knew all this so he did the smart (although aesthetically displeasing) thing a fought Tyson cautiously.

    True,

Smith must have had Tyson Vs Berbick in the back of his mind throughout the fight

he would have been stopped if he went for it but going 12 rounds with 87 tyson was an achievement in itself .

against a peak tyson, power itself does not win anyone the fight, mike had an awesome, greatly underrated chin. even towards the last few years of his career, tyson never seemed hurt or stunned by the power of any heavyweight, and it was more of a case of giving up whenever he lost....as a jaded, faded fighter

the only man i see having the tools to deal with a prime tyson, is ali, who i believe had the edge in terms of heart, and versatility, and would break tyson's will.

aside from that, it is impossible to state that anyone beats a peak mike tyson

The Williams and McBride fights were jokes ! Tyson was totally stupid even being in the ring for those pathetic performances. He had virtually nothing left after dining on Evander's ear. Tyson was a good fighter,at his best, but a total wanker as a person.

In theory, Smith could have KO'd Tyson, and Tyson could have KO'd Smith.
(The promotiomal tag line in the week leading up to the fight was "Don't blink or you'll miss it", a knockout was almost guaranteed).

In reality, Smith and Tyson decided to waltz around for 12 rounds in an absolute stinkeroo.

If Smith had opened up on Tyson, he would have been knocked out. The reason he hung on and held for 12 rounds was because he couldn't handle Tyson and had to turtle to survive. If he had opened up, Tyson would have found the hole. Smith didn't hold because he wanted to, he held because he was forced to. Big difference, and I don't think Tyson gets the credit he is due for this fight.

And this 12th round punch that gets talked about so much was nothing serious to Tyson. It gets waaaaaay too much credit. It's hard to even see it.
