I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to the Aussie boxing scene but I'm just wondering who would be the most household name down under.

I got the impression that Katsidis is not too well known when he was taking on Mitchell he really seemed to want to win over the British public and possibly set himself up to fight out of there.

Is it like Britain where warriors like Kats don't get the popularity they deserve like Froch, and pussies like Mundine are huge just like Haye is in Britain?

Can you give me a list of the top 5 most popular boxers in Australia.

1 thru 5 Green n Mundine only there the only two that get all the media coverage which is shithouse as id rather read about Kat's or Vic anyday of the week, them other two are overhyped in the media in Oz n the average Joe Blow get on there bandwagon....

That's a damn shame. I'd love to see Geale getting a good fan base for himself too. He seems like a top lad.

Sure is a shame, there's quite a few decent hard working boxers in Oz that get near enough to no media coverage in Oz which is a shame Geale is a great example.....

Green and Mandy are the most popular because of the **** they sprout and the way the media beats it up.

The likes of Geale Kats, Zappa, etc, barely get a look in because they don't speak enough ****.

To be fair though, without the media beat up, boxing would be even smaller than it is here.
And, it's not like Green and Mandy are ****, they're still in our top 5 fighters.

It's just a shame the media aren't very interested in our other top fighters.
Geale is the man to watch IMO.

It's a catch 22, if there was no Mundine and Green then the likes of Vic, Kat's Geale etc wld still have the small exposure as they currently do now............... next to zero.

Boxing is not mainstream and never will in this country because it's perceived as brutal and a poor mans sport.

    I beg to differ mate.
The reason that boxing is not mainstream sport, is because the media only channel sport that has multi-million dollar sponsorship.

If Westfield of Harvey Norman sponsored underwater ballet, there would be hourly updates on a competition in Galargambone.

Boxing has no sponsorship to speak of, yet it's in the top five of elite earners. That means it's probably the most popular single event sport on the planet but because local media don't get it, they stick to what the sponsorship tells them.

Pops if boxing was the most popular sport in aus they would have sponsorship. it gets the coverage in realtion to its popularity. it boxing rated over 1 000 000 every fight it would be on main stream tv twice a week

That sounds right mate, but, the general public have to have profiles, background, current activity & human interest stories invested in boxers to keep them updated.
The media are really only interested in propagating the bull**** in boxing & that sort of coverage repels sponsorship.
As I said, it's a single event sport, so coverage has to be singlular.

99% of people who follow boxing have to dig around the Net to get information on our mainstream fighters. The media can't jump on & off a sport.
Way back when. The game got standard reporting. Who when where why & how.
All we get today is "Who?"

I think the likes of Kats and Geale genuinely love there sport and care about Australian Boxings future, you can tell by the way they conduct themselves,as for Green and especially Mundine they are there to **** and pillage and turn Aussie boxing into a staged Circus to line there pockets and further there already suspect careers.!!!

Can't say much that hasn't already been said but yeah, Mundine / Green are the top of the pile as far as popularity goes in Australia.

Followed by Vic and Kats - I still see a room full of people at every fight they have on a Sunday (here) and I've been many big/small cities and towns to witness it. But they're not on the same level as Choc/Green.

Internationally though, Mundine / Green aren't even a blip on the radar compared to Kats/Vic. I would say Bika, Briggs (retired - surely) and Ndou even rate higher than Green/Mundine on the world scale.

I've always wanted to see boxing in general take on a form that is more easily marketable, easier to follow for the average Joe and easier to garner sponsorship & media coverage - but in thinking about that, would it not come at some cost to the sport itself as well?

Shame really, cuz it is the best by far, shame not as many people see it that way!

Danny Green and Anthony Mundine are well known the rest
are not unfortunately.Michael Katsidis is fighting the P4P no.3 fighter in the world this Sunday but you wouldnt know by the media.there was a excellent card on Oct 31 where Lenny Zappavigna and Daniel Geale earned title shots little reported if they win titles hopefully that will change.

Kats doesn't get nearly enough coverage, but if he beats JMM it might change a bit

Have you ever thought about the positive things Danny has done for many young boxers?
I'm talking about him helping out guys, putting his hand in his pocket donating to gyms ,going out and visiting under privlaged kids not to mention he often visits rural communities giving his time for free.
And how about the oppotunities Danny gives to young fighters on his card?
Talanted fighters like Kickett,Tomilson,Gartlett will all be better off because of the exposure they get from being on Dannys card:deal
You can also ask anyone who's ever fought on a GMP card and they'll tell you they were treated well and payed well.
I find it laughable that people like you blame Danny and Mundine as the reason that fighters like Katsidis and Geale don't get any coverage.
