Paul Williams long range Boxing........ I think a lot of people auto assume that he makes a conscious decision to give up his height, that he could be more effective fighting from long range, but I disagree, I think he got outboxed when he tried to slow the pace down, when he fought Cintron from long range, I also felt one of the reasons he fought so aggressive in both fights with Martinez, is cause he got outboxed from range when there was any separation, therefore im not sure the assertion, that if he gets another trainer, will auto turn him into a good long range fighter. Williams does not have that experience of Boxing from long range consistently that you build up through years and years of experience, now you could negate this somewhat if you had a intuitive sense for distance, but Williams seems to have neither.
He needs to go to Stewart and have him teach him to box ala Klitchsko then he might actually be a good fighter.
I dont know, but I'd be concerned about his decision making, as I say, a fighter should have an intuitive sense of what to do, what not to do, to differentiate what is going to leave you open, what isn't, Williams seems to lack that imo. Paul Williams doesn't seem to see danger imo, that in itself, is dangerous. One thing I would work on though, is his jab, as he tends to push it at times. When you throw the jab, you have to push off the backfoot, but they key is, that punch is in sync/coming out, at the same time you push off the backfoot, so you get that snap when you move into it.
Agreed also, Sense of distance is one of the most important elements in boxing imo. I think Williams understands he cant fight as a long range fighter because his general demeanour maybe construed as impatient. Im not sure how effective a trainer can be at improving his distance, im certain that Steward wont make a huge difference in the way Williams prepares himself mentally
I think Paul is a good fighter, but I do agree with Klitchsko comparsion. He does need to use his range alot more, but it won't happen. Paul simply isn't a boxer and for us to say he should change just because he lost to a great fighter and a lucky punch is bs. I personally think Martinez just has P. Will's number....as simple as that.
its not a case of boxing from long range its a simple case of having a fgreat reach advantage so get the jab poppin and work from there
Well for starters, USE YOUR ****ING HEIGHT and stop getting into pointless exchanges..Learn to tuck your chin when you engage and stop running head first. Work off his jab and give his opponents angels...He has an 82" wing span and still doesnt seem to know how easy fighting will be with a reach that big. He also needs to learn how to catch and pitch. If he would have did that this past weekend then maybe I wont be wearing this gay ass avatar!
Lucky punch? isnt lucky like a 1 in a million. He landed 3 consecutive lucky lefts in the minute of the 2nd round alone.
Its more than that imo, I think you have to have an arsenal of punches behind your jab to protect the distance, just incase they manage to slip inside your lead, or if they get desperate and try to walk in, Wlad has power, can drop the right hand on you, Larry Holmes had a great uppercut that he could whip in, Tommy Hearns had a devastating right hand, what could Williams potentially have? Williams doesn't even have a good jab IMO, he reaches with it, pushes it Some guys are just not effective when there is separation, when they slow the tempo down they get hit, picked off (Hatton), Williams thus far, makes me think thats the type of fighter he is. That said, Corrales managed to change and become a better Boxer under Joe Goosen (Casamayor 2)so I guess its not impossible, although I am skeptical how effective he will ever be dictating range.
