I disagree. The Hatton shot was perfect, from the hip, full rotation right on the sweet spot plus Hatton was walking onto the shot to which adds a huge amount. I'd also say Martinez shot his left out, almost straight, Pacquiao's was a whipped hook that to me looked much more vicious. Manny's shot was more fluid, crisp, perfect.......Serg's looked more brutal (maybe seeing pwil face plant added to it)
Check out 2.12. It's not that far off the Hatton shot...and I'd say was thrown with more power. Whether it landed with more power (the accuracy, speed and power made up the Hatton KO) is a different story...seemed to land cleanly, and Margarito acknowledged it with a smile. I'm actually pretty torn by the two to be honest. They were both rediclously destructive and I completely disagree with you I don't think there would be anyone in the middle weight division that could have taken that punch and not been knocked the **** out. The beauty of the shot was that Paul didn't see it coming. If you land a shot like that on a guy who doesn't see it coming and whose walking right into it they's gonna get KTFO no matter who you are. Know the reason that I'm so impressed with Martinez'z punch is because he meant to do it and he set it up beautifully. It looks like a lucky punch cause he's not even looking at Paul but if you pay attention he landed two punches just like it from a conventional straight on angle in the minute prior too knocking Paul out. It looks to me like he was trying to find the range for the punch from a conventional angle so that he could throw it from the non-conventional angle. What made the punch soo affective was that Paul`s eye`s weren`t tracking the whole of Martinez they were only focused on his body. After the fight Martinez said that he`s trainer had noticed something in about Paul williams that he hadn't previouisly noticed while he was watching tape a weeks before the fight. He said that his trainer had then written the fight plan on a hotel note pad that was in his room and that he had told Martinez that they were going to knock Paul out in the second round. The idea is that Sergio was planning on using that over hand left because it was a punch that he landed often near the end of first fight that what the training had noticed was tha tpaul william's head tracks his opponents body and that if Sergio slide inside and threw that show wide, out away from his body Paul wouldn`t see it coming. Sergio`s said that they practiced that off angle shot a lot in the lead up to the fight. So although it looks like a hail marry I believe it was a very excellently set up punch of the highest order. As far as pac's punch the thing that impresses me most is that if you watch Ricky hatton's body after he gets knocked out his arms go straight and his wrists turn upwards. This is called the descerabrate position...it is the default position that your spinal cord/brainstem puts your muscles in when they lose communication with the brain and pre-motor cortex. Basically what this means in laymans terms is that Ricky's his brain got so rattled that it actually stopped communicating with his body for a short period of time. So basically pac litterally and metiphorically separated Ricky from his senses...thats some serious ****ing destruction:good
Wow, this is insane. So one bad loss makes him an overrated fighter? He arguably got caught - which would not be any different than Rahman knocking out Lewis. If Paul was sooo overrated, why the hell wasn't he getting an opportunity from Floyd or Pac or any of the top welterweights prior to Paul getting knocked out? Obviously they and just about everyone else thought he was a threat. The dude had been a top ten P4P guy for an extensive period of time. And now, one loss makes him irrelevant. Are you kidding me? Why wasn't Ricky "overrated" after he got knocked out by Floyd? C'mon. If, according to you, Paul is overrated for getting knocked out then the same rule should apply to Hatton. And that would mathematically make both Sergio's and Pac's huge KO blows nothing special because they had fought "overrated" fighters - according to YOU, that is. According to me and I hope at least a majority of fans, there's nothing overrated about beating Winky Wright, Sergio (once), a prime Margarito, and Cintron (hey, a win is a win). We'll see how Paul bounces back from his loss but I see him still being threat to either Pac or Floyd which makes him a very good fighter.
It wasn't even that his eyes were closed...his whole head was turned. You posted the video, yet can't acknowledge that? :huh
Martinez ko is more impressive, no q about it. hatoon was a washout fighter, williams was/is in his prime, never been ko or really hurt, and yes he is a beast, just wait and watch his next few fights.
martinez kayo was better IMO. pacman hurt hatton with nothing shots in the first round, then finished him off in the second. martinez landed his big left numerous times stopping paul in his tracks. the final time he threw it, paul was leaning forward, a lean he strated just before sergio threw the punch, suggesting he was ready for it. that one punch ended the night without any obvious warning. looking back now we cann all see sergio repeatedly throw it, but none of us expected the punch to end the fight after just 4 minutes. it isnt really comparable. in terms of highlight quality they may be similar, but looking at the bigger picture, sergio's punch is far better.
I disagree, but well said. I respect your opinion. But you, just like every other person arguing for Martinez are using other fights, i.e., Mayweather, Callazo, Lazcano, as leverage to why Pac's shot was less impressive. From a technical and significance standpoint, Pac wins hands down.
Martinez put his ALL into that punch. Pacquiao just has a lot of power. What made both of their punches so effective, however, is the fact that neither Hatton or Williams saw the punch coming which is also attributed to speed. To me, they are honestly equal, and I hesitate to say that Martinez' punch was just a lucky punch. I hesitate to say this because if you re-watch the first fight, after Williams began to adapt to neutralizing Martinez' right hand that he was landing all night, Martinez began to land that exact same left hand punch in the 10th round on. In MY mind, Martinez-Williams II was just a continuation of Martinez-Williams I from the 10th round on. In their first fight from the 10th round on, you can tell how hard that left hand punch as landing. It was snapping Williams' head back pretty badly. It was only a matter of time before Williams would walk into the punch with his chin in the air, much the way it was a matter of time before Hatton walked in blindly to Pacquiao's left hand. Not that I underrate Pacquiao's power...he clearly has power. But let's be honest here. Pacquiao hit David Diaz with everything but the kitchen sink. David Diaz, however, didn't fight aggressively in such a naive way that he opened himself to punches he didn't see coming. He SAW them coming, the problem was, he couldn't react fast enough to get out of the way. His knockout was the accumulation of punches. Cotto also weathered Pacquiao's punches EXCEPT the punches that hit him from odd angles that he didn't see coming. Another example? Torres vs. Holt II. Holt isn't what I'd call a power puncher. He, however, stunned Torres with a head butt, and followed up with a hook that Torres didn't see coming. This punch that he didn't see coming, knocked him out cold. Case in point, Pacquiao is definitely more powerful for his size than Martinez is for his size. But quite frankly, both of their devastating knockouts of Hatton & Williams, respectively, came because their opponents naively walked into a punch they didn't see with their chin exposed. And both Pacquiao & Martinez, being fast and intelligent, took advantage of the naive overzealous aggression of their opponents.
I'm not trying to use it as leverage, just like everything I said I'm trying to speak on a bunch of dynamics. For instance, when I talked about the events themselves this is what I mean: people who don't follow boxing know Pacquaio obliterated Hatton and those same people probably don't know Martinez obliterated Williams. Let's say you worked at a place where nobody is a boxing fan but you...when you say "Wow! Did you see _____ KO ____?!" which one do you think people would know? Having said that, part of the dynamics of a massive KO is the KO victim. If Martinez KO'd someone like a Margarito who is legitimately a proven chin it becomes bigger than his KO of Williams. It has to be taken into account, not from technical aspects but just from the aspect of how much can the fighter take. You can say "oh that punch would have knocked anybody out"...there's no way to prove it. So what do you do? You look on past fights to see how much the KO victims been hurt. As you could see I'm not "leveraging" because I don't believe in any way that he's an "iron chin" fighter. But Hatton was definately getting hurt badly by guys who aren't really known for KO'ing people. To sum it up, I'm speaking on Hatton and Williams chin as a separate category than the technical aspects of the punch. EDIT: Speaking more on chins and "event/resonation". The year that Pac unanimously won KO of the year from everyone there was another MONSTER KO. Abraham KOing Taylor in the 12th. I would argue that it would be pretty impossible to rate that higher than Pacquiao's KO simply because the event wasn't as large and the fact that Taylor's chin has pretty much been ruined. It's ok if you think one massive KO is better than the other, I'm just saying it's a multi-faceted issue.
The debate should only border on whose delivery of the punch is more impressive, meaning punch dynamics etc. It is given that regardless who was hit by those punches, no one is getting up. Hatton's punch resistance or his performance in the first round as well as william's first round does not have bearing because even if they were unmarked in those round, it would still be a sleeping ko. So the question that has to be asked is who delivered the more impressive ko.
