You are ****ing ******ed. To say Martinez is "slicker" and "faster" than Spinks is bogus. JT lost to guys who are "punchers" Pavlik, AA, Froch and while Martinez is a great fighter he's not a puncher of this caliber and you are tripping if you think he would "do a number on JT". Not saying JT would beat him, but to act as if he would just walk through him is crazy.

I did say he would take some rounds, but JT doesnt have the stuff to beat Martinez, period.

And his middleweight "reign" was a joke. How many fighters get outlanded and outsmarted in 2 of thier biggest "wins" and that "draw" against Winky was an even bigger joke, Winky won that fight clearly.

And what in the hell did Ouma and Spinks do to deserve title shots, at friggin 160?????

JT was an average fighter who could have been better had he not caught a ride on the HBO hype train, but he never had the chance. He was in deep too soon, only because the boxing establishment wanted Hopkins out of the way so they could have a young, easily controlled kid they could market as a "champ".

He was a victim of the dark side of boxing, and, even though I was never really a fan, he paid a cost that was really too damn high.

I almost cried when I saw him on the canvas after the AA KO, it was pitiful.

The man is done. No more pain.:deal

it's ridiculous how short people's memories are...you can only talk about sergio martinez, pac's atg status (he's still fighting and his place in the pantheon will be easier to see in a few years...like Jones' after Ruiz was the GOAt for a sec and then he has settled into 30-50 range), and the mayweather-pac fight right now I guess. Taylor frustrated Hopkins and vice versa but I thought taylor definitely won the first one for sure, the second one was a hard fight to score so little actually happened but I had it 114-113 Taylor...Thought Winky won his fight with Taylor but it was close and that was in a time when Winky was seen as being 'the fighter most feared,' because nobody ever looked good against him. I think his achilles' heel was the spotlight and stamina (bhop didn't test that-they fought at a slow pace) and I think ultimately he came in way too tight into his fights, burning energy, at times, when he could have been relaxed, but alert, at certain times in his fights.

He faded late in both BHOP fights and with Winky.

BHOP showed him he wasnt invincinble, but the hype machine kept pushing that he was.

They burned him out too early. Had he another 2 years or so to develop, he might still be champ today.

But he didnt, and he isn't. End of story.

So you think he would beat BHOP twice but couldn't beat Martinez? I'm not big on "if's" and "buts", but he had Pavlik and Froch beat prior to being KO'd. He could have taken a knee after being knocked down by Froch in the 12th and still won that fight. The issues with his chin were in proportion with his training and conditioning issues (which are his fault, no argument on that), but to say he could beat BHOP twice, draw with that version of Winky, have Pavlik and Froch beat, but couldn't beat Martinez is crazy talk. Again, I'm not trying to say JT beats Martinez, I'm simply saying he would be a helluva challenge and I certainly wouldn't be shocked. That being said what he accomplished stands on it's own. This BHOP was robbed ****, that's so weak, 5 of the 6 judges who watched the fights had JT winning BOTH fights. The man EARNED his respect, simple and plain.

Stop making sense, didn't you get the memo, Martinez is top ten middleweight (maybe as good, if not better, than Monzon) of all-time this week on ESB. To say anything other than that is blasphemous.

i wasnt really trying to say he's an atg or anything...just that he's not the can a lot of people are making him out to be right now.

a lot of top fighters seem to run away from their weakness once they are exposed. kelly showed what works against jermain. he could have avoided such fighters like many today would do...but instead he got in there w/ froch and abraham. he should be applauded and not condemned

He is an average fighter, who got caught up in the hype machine, and paid the price. He had balls, no question, but it takes more than that to be a great fighter.

Also, him coming back is just pure lunacy. He lost 4 of his last 5 fights, 3 by gruesome stoppages.

He's ****ing shot, man. It's all over.

He earned both victories over Hopkins and the draw with Winky by winning the 12th round, sure he got taken into deep water and yes he was still green, but these are two of the best "craftsmen"/pure/true Boxers of our generation...would you expect anything less. Do you realize prior to the Hopkins fight he hadn't lost a round as a pro, think on that for a second, so yeah it was new territory but he did what "Champions" do, he fought his ****ing ass off and gutted out three fights that other guys would use as the centerpiece of their careers. I'll put it this way, no one at 160 now or then, goes Hopkins, Hopkins, Winky (those guys then) and come out on the other side undefeated, point blank.

No arguments from me on those points-he was never invincible-but he was young and he had just beat bhop, for sure a master craftsman and atg, so he and maybe the hype machine gave the impression that he would get better and better and he was also marketed on the fact that he was a nice humble guy-maybe all this **** was the cause of his downfall-I just think he was never meant to be in the spotlight for too long...so he was very good (not great) for a time and he now seems burned out...definitely not a bum.

Respect? ok fine. But he isnt a great fighter, or a particularly memorable one. He never became the superstar they built him up to be, because, at the end of the day, he didn't have the tools to make it.

You can respect him, but he was average at best, nothing more. He also cannot take any more punishment, so let him live in peace.

i'd rather not see him fight. i agree. i'm not saying anything about what he is today. today i think he's shot. i think he'd be risking more than he would gain. i'm talking about people using what he is today as the basis for what his whole career was.

what other average fighter fought bhop that tough? i'll keep using that as an example b/c you can't escape it.
