George Groves has set his sights on a blockbuster showdown with arch-rival James DeGale, following his all-action victory over previously unbeaten Scot Kenny Anderson at the weekend.
Groves was involved in the fight of the night on the Sky Box Office Haye v Harrison bill and paid full credit to Anderson after stopping the Scot in six: “All credit to him; he was a really strong tough guy. He gave me exactly what I needed at this stage of my career”, said Groves.
"I've had to come through a tough fight with Kenny, who in my opinion would give DeGale and Smith a good run for their money. I've stopped him in six rounds and nobody has come close to that before.
"Hopefully everyone who has seen the fight has enjoyed it. I'm going to go and analyse it because there were a lot of mistakes. Whether that was literally mistakes in the fight or in the lead up to the fight, we'll have to address because it wasn't as smooth as it could have been."
That bout with Anderson was a final eliminator for the British title - an astute move from Hayemaker, who recently had their counter-offer to fight DeGale dismissed out of hand - which means Groves is now the mandatory challenger for the winner of the December 11th clash between DeGale and current British title holder Paul Smith in Liverpool.
“He has to fight me if he comes through Smith,” added Groves.
“I want to fight James Degale. He’s destined for failure. He talks a good game but once he gets in there with someone real and someone live like me then he will be on the floor.
“It will be like Bernard Hopkins and Kelly Pavlik. Is this the superstar everyone has built up? I know how to take him apart mentally and physically. That’s what will happen.
"It's not even a foregone conclusion in Liverpool next month. Fingers crossed he does win, although that's not to say I don't like Smith. That would also be a cracking fight too whether it's in London or Liverpool because both sets of fans would travel for it."

Interesting. what do you think the outcome of the fight would be?

This rivalry is building nicely. Hope it happens. Will be one of the biggest fights for a British title for a while.

I don't know about taking him apart mentally, Groves needed his daddy Adam Booth to protect him from big bad Kenny Anderson.

They need to fight soon before the fight becomes pointless.

Groves is like a lil child hanging onto Haye's jeans. ''I love you David...your my hero!!...wish i could be like you...i'm gonna stand with my hands down when i fight and try land bombs just to be like you Big D''. Makes me ****ing sick especially that gay lil jump as Audley hits the canvas.

    DeGale beats Groves IMO!

Yep, Groves is turning into a mini-Haye, which is the last thing we need.

One Haye is one too many, thanks very much

In a way Groves impressed me in the Anderson fight. I mean, he fought terribly, took an awful beating and if yer man hadn't gassed out he would have certainly lost I think. But he did show he's got heart, he's accurate enough with shots and he's got good power.

I've always leaned towards DeGale winning if they fight though, and I still do. Much better all round fighter than Groves.

Disagree with this. The fight only becomes pointless if both lose severall times or go past there primes, which I cannot see happening for some time.

I disagree that Anderson gassed. Groves allowed Anderson into the fight not the other way round. If you take out the 3rd round, Groves would of stopped his man eventually.

I think both have potential to do well but I also believe both have potential to start losing at this stage of each mans career. I can certainly see Smith beating DeGale and Anderson beating Groves if they have a rematch....if one take a couple of loses or even one loss and the other continues to win then the fight will drop off in interest to the point that the fighter with the loss will be the only one shouting for the fight while the winner says 'I do not need him...I am fighting for big titles amd he is a step down...he has already lost so I do not even have to shut him up'....while us fans sit back and think about what may have been.

Taking a look at how Groves as performed so far in his career I can not see him fighting at the top level along with the superior DeGale.

Groves did not fight atall well in the Anderson fight, got hit with some good shots and he kept getting hit. tbh i thought he was sloppy at times. give him his due though he came back and done wht he needed to do. he would need to be carefull against Chunky, but i cant decide who would win atm

How much training did Kenny Anderson have, was it 2 or 3 weeks?

Same can be said for Groves.

Groves beats Degale imo, just as he did in the ams.
