    Paul Weir

Calzaghe never won a belt at 175 so cant be counted, Im only counting the big 4, someone told me we had 10 two weight champs ?

And this is why this kind of 'achievement' is pointless. Presumably Calzaghe should've just beat the weakest alphabelt holder out there rather than going after the number one in Bernard Hopkins? Not having a go at you but it does my head in when people talk about world champions but mention pretend ones rather than the genuine main man in a division.

There's plenty of problems with the ring's title but it's far more legitimate than any of those other awful alphabelts.

No mandatorys??? You can win the title and fight bums for 10 years

Go with the true lineal title not the ring (which Calzaghe didn't win btw)

No mandatorys?? All the Ring have to do is add a rule where you have to fight at least 1 top 10 ranked fighter a year to keep your title and i would take it seriously.

the point of the ring title is that the best fight the best....but that only happens for the vacant belt. not the actual title defences.

I agree, all the names on that list Hatton, Haye etc won a belt as their second world title. They didn't beat the number 1 guy and the legit champ at the higher weight. Theres others on that list who didn't even do that for either of their world titles.

If thats where the bar is set of a "2 weight world champ" then Calzaghe deserves to be included IMHO.

Yes Calzaghe is the only British fighter to be the number 1 in 2 divisions.

Unless there's one main recognised governing body for the sport then mandatories are gonna be pointless anyway. Tell me the last time a genuine number one contender in a division was mandatory for one of those fraud alphabelts AND got his shot at the true champion of that weight class?

As it stands, the Ring is usually the closest we have to the true champion in a division. I'm not a massive fan of it because as you said it still doesn't guarantee that it's the proper number one who has to fight top contenders consistently as they should do. But it's still far more legitimate than any of the sanctioning bodies have been in decades now.

We've been through this Rob. Its about not stripping champions rather than trying to force them to meet an arbitary line in the sand over fighting a certain amount of ranked fighters in a certain amount time.

Mandatories would improve the Ring title but would also open up a can of worms over their ability to enforce those mandatories and losing linearality of the title if they started stripping champions.

Even with that fault their champs and especially their rankings are better than the Alphabet Boys.
