Like haggler sayd Ameatur pot shot boxer. Thats also my oppinion Duran, Haggler was true fighters and Sugar ray leonard should have stayed in the ameatur league.. No wonder I dislike Mayweather so much preatty much the same thing go 12 rounds with pot shots and then win it and claim you greatatschatsch Maybe its just me I simply dont like this type of "boxing" however Ill give Sugar Ray Leonard respect for fighting the best there was, atleast he had huge balls
Thats why Boxing is such a great sport so many styles and different oppinions However I still stand 100% behind what i sayd just becuase you artn "slick" and arnt african american doesnt mean you cant box.
Great boxer imo I dont think he is overrated to be honest but I do think he lost to Haggler. SRL could do it all he could fight ,box, great boxing brain, speed and a good dig. I do think he carried on to long but nothing new there.
It's hard to be considered overrated when a fighter has victories over Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler.
This kind of comment shows you aren't very familiar with Leonard's career. Did you ever see his fights with Duran, Benitez, Hearns or Hagler? he outboxed Hagler for most of the fight but there were plenty of times when he outfought him on the inside. Leonard had Hearns running from him as he stalked him at times in their fights. Sugar Ray went toe to teo with Roberto Duran for 15 rounds in their first fight - ultimately costing him the decision. Sugar Ray Leonard was hardly a pot shot boxer. He was a masterful boxer with the supreme ability to finish a fight when he had an opponent hurt. Mayweather doesn't come anywhere close.
Great post and I can tell you studied Leonard's career but the only comparisons I can make with SRL & Mayweather is that both can adapt, both have great chins(Leonard's is better), and both know when to box & when to fight. SRL is clearly greater than Mayweather and will remain clearly greater. You also forget to say that Leonard outfoxed master boxer Benitez lol.
Im not a 100% expert on Sugar Ray Leonard simply becuase like i stated I dont like his kind of style. But I have seen alot of them and yes you right he did go toe to toe with Duran in there first fight and got beat horrible. Then he come back 2nd fight and did pot shot boxing. And i totally understand why Duran decided to quit. And thats my point in a strait up boxing match he would lose. Alot of you would disagree with me I know. l8r he won the 2nd match becuase of his slick pot shot boxing. however for me personally I think its a joke. This is boxing not "olympic sprint around the ring" and trow a few jab now and again and then win on points. I still stand behind what Haggle said and I know ill proberly get a huge beatdown for my statement.
Black fighters in America always get a bad rap thats just the way it is ,but it doesn't bother us where use too it. And no.. he never was overrated and the first fighter to make over 100 mil.
Duran quit because Leonard kept clowning him as he was outboxing him. He also wasn't just pot shotting Duran. Leonard was also outfighting him on the inside and then moving away forcing Duran to chase him again. Leonard was landing full flurries and combinations on the inside. In second fight, Sugar Ray was not only outfighting Duran in every facet of the game - he was dictating the terms of the entire fight.
