You could not possibly be any more wrong. The very idea that SRL was overrated is ****ing ludicrous. I have nothing else to say on the matter really, this is complete nonsense. :-(
Not the same. Leonard and Hearns started as welterweights. May and Pac have been climbing from superfeatherweight and below.
Leonard is 'an amateur pot shot boxer'? Come on, now. He was a superb fighter, one of the most well-rounded that I've ever seen. He could box with the best of them, and stand toe-to-toe and trade, too. He had handspeed, legspeed, power, a chin, stamina, heart, intelligence, adaptability, timing, great skill with combination punching, etc. He found a way through the slick defence of Benitez; he conquered the freakishly big, fast and powerful Hearns in their first fight; he used movement and taunting tactics that were effective enough to actually make Duran quit in the middle of a round; he came out of a long period of inactivity, moved up in weight and had a really close match with Hagler, which is impressive whether you think he won or not. The man was a special fighter. Did he lose? Sure. Most people agree that he lost to Hearns in the rematch, and we all know that Duran beat him, etc. That doesn't make him any less of a great fighter, though. If he was just an 'amateur pot shot boxer' he wouldn't have achieved even half of what he did.
some of these threads are unbelievable. The quality he fought from Nov. 1979 to Sept 1981 was unheard of. If anything he is underrated because of his inactivity. I think he put his all out so much in those two years that he didn't have much left in 1982 when he was very young. After that he had to handpick and do that catchweight stuff, but before that he fought them all. I think top 10 ATG because he beat greats.
How is he a horrible person? I am not arguing with it, just curious what you mean since you say it in such a sure way. the other 3 of the fab 4 Duran,Hearns and Hagler seemed to be nicer people in a way, but why do you think ray was a horrible person?
Good post Maybe my comment that Leonard is 'an amateur pot shot boxer' was abit over the edge. Especially when you put it like this. However I still say he stole some fights simply becuase of his pot shot style.
Leonard at 147 was one of the most difficult wleterweights to beat in the history of the sport. Considering the richness of the division, that's one hell of a claim to fame.
