One of my faves and one of the best bouts you will see, great performance from to great boxers. I had it around 10-5 for Duran, though I don't think I have ever scored it. Leonard was not green, did not get draged into fighting Durans fight, just got beat by the better boxer on the night.
Hagler/Hearns had some fierce, tense atmosphere that´s right. That´s why I regard it highly. But I just like Leonard-Hearns much more. In Leonard-Hearns both fighters foguth at their absolute best while in Halger-Hearns only Hagler fought at his best, Tommy fought a dumb fight and injured his main weapon in the first round. He was better against Leonard the first time around IMO. That fight just delivers more.
A lot of the fight was undeniably close, but no matter how many times I watch it,I always have Duran winning it by anything between 3 - 5 rounds.
We've the benifit of being able to re-watch it time & time again hav'nt we unlike the judges who had to make the call on the night. But Duran always had the last word in exchanges did'nt he & you study Leonards face in some of those rounds & you can see the evident distress.as Duran slips Leonards lead & piles into him, totally man-handling him & smothering him with body shots & hooks. Leonard really fought a life & death fight & he had too did'nt he. It was Leonard who was doing all the holding & grappling & in this day & age there's some refs that would maybe have taken a points off of Leonard as Padilla was whacking Leonards hands free every round. Sure Leonard landed plenty of his own but no were near enough to say that he won any round convincingly. He was shocked at Duran's speed of counter & he just could'nt find a way to deal with it & as he's said on numerous occasions that to run from duran would have been suicide & the only way was to stop Duran getting any momentum & that was to step into him & tie him up & then overpower him in the later rounds what with him being younger/fresher/faster/bigger & stronger than Duran & thats why i've always been of the mind that Leonard never ever really wanted a part of Duran again as when you perceive that you have all the natural advantages/gameplan & still end up having yer arse handed to yer it's going to stay with you forever. When all is said & done this has to have been one of the greatest contests of all time & fought on a level playing field it ended with the better all round boxer coming out on top & Duran always would defeat Leonard on a level playing field & in this fight both men gave everything that they had 100%+ & some & with both of them employing every ounce of fistic nous that they possessed, a true classic for the ages & a most definite for any aspiring fighter to watch & see what it takes to win a championship as the underdog & also as a champion too defend it to his last breath as Leonard showed.
I have to find my cards. I am happy that Duran won, but when I am not being baised I give Leonard the win.
I'm slightly confused with this line of reasoning. Leonard was green when they fought the first time but was a seasoned pro when they fought the second time. Could you please refresh my memory as to how much time pasted between these two fights and how much Leonard may have matured during that time, through additional experience please. Thanks!
I always felt that Duran won the fight pretty clearly, it wasn't a one sided fight at all but the rounds that Duran won he won clearly and there were a few rounds that were close and could have went either way. I remember I while back reading a quote by Dundee that SRL's attempts to out-brawl Duran was a deliberate tactic because they felt Leonard had a big advantage because of his size and strength at 147. It would make since Duran's KO percentage dipped at 147 and was lower than Leonards in the 5 or so fights they both had before they met. I can't remember where I read it so I can't source it/ it might be BS. 5 Months with no fights for either guy in that time.:good
I had Leonard winning the last three rounds of the fight. In part this is because Duran took the pedal off the medal, and in part it's because Leonard boxed more and brawled less; and had more success as a result. The first could have gone either way, since not much happened. There were also a number of rounds in the middle portion of the fight that were close enough that they could be scored for SRL without too much complaint. So, that means that a person's sanity shouldn't be questioned if they call the fight for Leonard 8-7. As stated, there were a number of swing rounds...And while these days I find myself giving a couple more of them to Duran then to Leonard (and giving him the close decision as a result), I honestly think that it's flat out ****ing arrogant of Duran fans to think this was a complete whitewash, both in terms of in ring action on the cards.
Who the **** on here has even said it's a whitewash you mug:nut Any **** that scored this fight 8/7 for Leonard is a wanker now go contact ESB lost property as they've got that white stick of yours:smoke
