None of Liston's title challengers were as durable or relentless or hard-punching as Marciano. Marciano would bury Liston.

See how dumb this kind of playground argument is?

I don't care if I'm appealing to emotion. Marciano knew Liston could always have been "had" and he takes some lumps but busts the bully up and makes him quit. I might outline my actual rationale in a longer post about this but a lot of good stuff has been said on this thread (Contrary to most H2H threads. This one seems to bring out feverish posts. I suspect because these men are both great but both known to be great in massively different ways).

The Liston nuthuggery has to stop. Sonny was a guy who had his jaw broken by Marty Marshall, and had to cheat with the ointment to get his best wins. He was not an unstoppable monster.

He was very fortunate to get his shot agaisnt a chinny lightheavy who refused to fight anyone worth a damn named Floyd Patterson.

As Paul Newman said with his immortal line in "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid":

"Don't sugarcoat it Kid, tell her straight!"

    WTF is this nonsense?

Patterson fought Johansson, Ali x2, Liston x2, Moore, Ellis, Quarry, Chuvallo, Machen, Durelle, Harris. And he was chinny? Although he fought many punchers, he was only ever stopped by the greatest HW of all time, Ali, and two great HW punchers, Johannson (who he beat 2/3) and Liston. Why are you denegrating Patterson?

What wins did Liston use ointment to get?

I think Ali nutthugerry has to to stop, he was lucky against Jones, lucky against Cooper and he only fought three great fighters in their absolute primes, Frazier, Norton and Holmes, and he lost to all of them.

McGrain's right, everybody. Patterson rules and Ali drools! So there! Also, may I say, gentlemen, bros before hoes.

    "Cheat with the ointment"

And if one looks closely over his career, it becomes apparent that those who can't or won't employ a stick and move or spoiling strategy against Liston are in deep ****. Virtually all of his biggest struggles and losses in the ring came against guys who moved away from him. Rocky's not going to be moving away.

avoided?? Its not Marciano's fault that Valdez lost to Archie Moore taking Valdez' number 1 contender and upcoming title shot.

    Nobody's nuthugging.

You forgot to mention that he very very green when he lost to marshall, and also stopped him in the rematch
How was he fortunate? He should've got his title shot a couple years ago, not fortunate.

If people think Liston would beat Marciano, I think it's plenty reasonable. It's certainly not nuthugging :lol::lol:

I think Valdez is pretty over rated.

Especially as a win for Liston considering how best his best he was.

Just think its not right to put Valdez as a guy Marciano duck in arguments when the guy got the shot earn the title shot, and drop the ball here or there.

Valdez had the chance to force the Marciano fight, failed when Moore beat him, and slide ever since than.

Didn't Valdes also lose 4 straight in '52, the year The Rock won the title?

    Styles make the fight.
I don't think anyone would doubt that Sonny wins the first 6 rounds with that
    'telephone pole' like jab.
But what happens after those 6 rounds, if Rocky is still there.

Rocky is a battered heap of man and looks like he's just been run over by a bus.

Don't expect Liston to punch himself out. He could fight behind his jab all night.
