What do you think of Alistair Overeem as a boxer?

jerome le banner has done alright against weak competition, but I see no reason that overeem could not accomplish something similar.

Its not cut and dry I agree but in general K1 is a fastered paced more aggresive sport than boxing.

Aggresion can lead to sucess in boxing obviously but the danger of pushing too hard in a sport where defence is IMHO easier and the matches much longer is obviously greater.

 

I dno man, Tua is too short for that overhand to really do damage on him, and Overeem's defence consists mainly of putting his hands on his head and flaring out his elbows.

 

This is a strawman argument.

Manny doesn't have to deal with kicks or knees etc, so it is irrelevant. However, if Manny were a Thai boxer (which I believe he actually used to be) he would retain the speed and footwork he already has. It is directly transferrable.

Overeem does most of his damage with knees and overhand rights. His striking is not particularly flashy or technical, he wins because he's bigger and stronger than his opponents. In a boxing match with david Tua, he would be bigger, but not necessarily stronger than his opponent. He definitely wouldn't have the advantage in punching power, and he doesn't have the footwork to defeat a 'slugger'. Tua was never as good as the likes of Tyson, but that mother****er could hit hard enough that your ancestors felt it.

 

I've spent more total years in various forms of kickboxing than I have in boxing, so I am very aware of what a kickboxer has to deal with. One thing they rarely, if ever have to deal with however is good footwork and combination punching. Most kickboxers suck at punching, even Mike Zambidis, who hits like a train, would get raped in a boxing match against a similarly experienced opponent.

None of these examples are under boxing rules, and in none of these did he show 'good' boxing.

Overeem is a fighter who sits in a mid/high level mma league when the opponents to match his standup caliber are in the UFC. Of course he will look good against opponents who are not on his level. This has no reflection on his abilities as a boxer.

 

Not that I'd expect Overeem to have anything beyond moderate sucess in boxing but your wrong on both counts there. The hype he's been getting as a striker has mostly come from facing some of the best HW kickboxers in the world not from MMA. Even if it had I'd say theres a good deal more striking talent outside the UFC right now than in it at HW, Fedor, Sergei, Bigfoot etc.

 

You're slipping away from the point here. Nobody is disputing his kickboxing prowess.. I'm saying he wouldn't be a great boxer. You have agreed. This argument is over.

 

I cant believe that some people on this forum said that David Tua cant win against Overeem.Tua had bad night vs Monte Barett but he is still dangerous puncher.When some fighter lose fight people says that he is shot,finished and if he wins after that he is great,he will be champion and he is not past his prime.The best example is Abraham.Before fight with Froch people talked that he is the best and after fight i heard some comentaries that he is shot.So many experts on this forum probably knows better boxing than top trainers and fighters,i dont think so.Tua will brutally KO Overeem.Overeem cant take punch from Budr Hary.For example how many punches Briggs have taken from Vitali Klitschko and dont get down,and there is no comparition in power between Klitschko and Hary.Botha was considered when he fought in K1 as big puncher.In boxing he was not considered as a puncher.Look at fights of top K1 fighters in boxing.Ray Sefo never taken KO in K1 that he taken in boxing.Even today money in boxing is much bigger and if Overeem is so good he will go to the boxing but he probably knows that he doesnt have a chance.Boxers are punching much stronger than K1 fighters and they can take punch much better.Boxers are just better athlethes because money is bigger and with money competition is bigger.Sorry K1 fans i love watching K1 and respect all fighters in K1 but this is my opinion.

 

Reem is a big and athletic fighter. He is quite co-ordinated, agile etc for a guy so big. His striking was continously improving but against Edwards (a guy with boxing experience) he showed that his hands are improving too.

He could be successful in boxing. I'm think he would need to adapt but it would be hard. Overeem is one of the few fighters that has footwork to fight at kicking and punching range while be aware of the pro's and con's of doing so.

I don't think he could go in and beat someone like Tua or Adamek from the off. They are too experience and after a couple of rounds of looking competent he would be taken into deep waters and undone. I also think that to date he has a bully mentality, a bit like Brock, Bruno and numerous others.

Saki could do very well in boxing. He rips combos like he'd been boxing all his life.

The K1 GP hosts an incredible level of striking talent. I would love to see all striking arts meet in it to decide the best.

 

Maybe if Overeem had gotten into boxing at an earlier age he could've had some success, but at this stage it's hard for me to see him beating decent heavies.

He lacks good footwork, his head movement is non-existent, his hands aren't anything special, his chin is questionable, and he has had stamina issues in the past.

I'm willing to bet that even a current, fat, out of prime Tua could knock Alistair out in a boxing match.
