If a limited fighter like Katsidis can knockdown Marquez than the professor can for sure. Marquez is a beautiful counterpuncher but I think his defensive issues spell doom for him here. I think Nelson gets to him and knocks him out at least twice but he doesn´t knock him out. Clear UD for Nelson. I´m a bit biased though, Nelson is one of my favs.
We could probably come up with a long list of ironic "If a limited fighter like so-and-so could knock him down..." deals. If a limited fighter like Wepner could knock Ali down...think what Lennox would do to him! If a limited fighter like Rademacher could knock Patterson down, think what Liston wou-...wait, bad example. Never mind. Forget I said anything.
Marquez's short accurate compact punches hit the target before Nelson's wider shots and the Ghanian gets countered and generally outfought because of JMMs superior skill. Nelson's certainly the stronger man and would pressure JMM but as we've seen against bigger pressure fighters like Katsidis and Diaz that type of pressure doesn't work and you end up paying a big price for it
true, true. Well, we also did see the Pacquiao fights. And yes Marquez did great in both, I thought he won the first one, but Pac got to him and I think Nelson would do too. Totally can see what you are saying too though.
Pac did get to him but he's so good at staying compused and rallying back once hurt. Pac is also a much straighter puncher and faster than Azumah so he wouldn't land as easily as Pac, who had low number of punches landed himself. Also it should be noted Pac, Diaz, Katsidis were all bigger men than JMM, I have a feeling he was giving up weight in the ring last night and against Diaz (who was known for gaining 20lbs after the weigh in)
I think last night's Marquez wins a comfortable decision over mid 90's Nelson. Marquez lands the sharper punches, but Nelson's defense was better than Katsidis and Diaz so he lasts the distance. Nelson wasn't srictly a brawler. Prime mid-80's Nelson was better than last night's version of Marquez, but Nelson was then at 126 so comparison can't be made. Prime 126 Marquez decisions prime 126 Nelson, but in a close fight.

I'm not trying to call you out for changing your mind. I do it all the time. Marquez has been in several fights since then. I'm curious as to which fight(s) made you change yours.
Fair enough. I was being honest about the changing my mind part. I remembered creating that thread, and when I read I thought "what the **** was I thinking about Morales?" Then after briefly shaking myself up, I realized what I must have been thinking. Even though he was taller, Morales threw shorter punches. When things heated up, as would surely be the case, Morales could beat Nelson to the punch.
