Where exactly would "Bad" Bennie Briscoe rate in Middleweight history. Most certainly in another era Bennie would have been Champion. or would he?

I like him. He would be a top mw in any era but I think he lacks the little something that you need to be really up there. A memorable fighter but one that would always come up short against the very best.

I don't know about that. The '70s was actually less deep than a lot of the prior eras, and Briscoe was beaten decisively by aging remnants of the prior era like Griffith and Rodriguez. It should also be remembered that Briscoe had opportunities to win titles outside of just the ATG Monzon, but he fell short in those as well.

Personally I think Briscoe is actually a bit overrated. He seems to get rated more on his reputation and mystique than his actual fights and accomplishments.

Without analysing it too much, Briscoe would be top ten in any era.
Today, he'd be mandatory for Martinez.

I agree with this. Briscoe has a loyal cult following but he had TONS of opportunities to show what he could do against the best and usually couldnt win the big ones.

    Arguably the best 'Philadelphia Middleweight'.
And that city, had a ton of 'mean motherf***er' Middleweights.

That city should have had their own 'Middlweight Championships'

With George Benton, Joey Giardello and Bernard Hopkins in the running? I beg to differ.

    Thanks Slakka.

To me it sounds like a fight where a draw could have been fair, as the author of that report blatantly did not like Monzon's tactics, but perhaps this is justified.

    I'll need to research more.

There were loads of reports that Griffith beat Monzon in the rematch.

Hard to say for sure with the first Briscoe vs Monzon bout, especially with the draw system Argentina had in place.

Also i'm not sure about this Briscoe had loads of chances, but was never quite good enough thing. He could certainly be beat by a good cute stylist or mover, especially over 10 rounds, we all know that, but he did not have a lot of title shot failures against a variety of opposition. He wasn't an Iran Barkley type.No shame in losing to Monzon and Valdez, with the last challenge a fight between two past prime fighters.Losing to Rodriguez is no shame either, Luis always did just as well against middles asn he did welters until he was washed up, which he certainly was not when he beat Briscoe.

A very good fighter and contender who had a long window of being really good imo. That's his place in middle history for me.No more, no less.

What would you consider Briscoes best win, or his career defining win?
