Is it just me or is this Dude just an out & out brawler / bordering on cheat in the ring ??? The amount of holds, head Butts & Elbows in his fights is shocking.. I'm wondering if Froch could adopt the same tactics as last night if & when they meet...
its not preety but it is effective the bit i didnt like was him complaining about bika doing what he himself does at every oppotunity
Ward fights like a grizzled 40 year old vet. Knows what he can and can't do and if he can't do it...he will border on it and use it to his adavnatage. He's well schooled and a lot of young champions may of struggled with Bika bigtime but he got the job done and that's what champions do. His style is different for each fight because he adapts but one thing he always does and it works to perfection is work then hold then reset. IE. Don't let the opposition counter back, do my work and be get away.
Personally I don't see it as ugly, fair enough if other people do but there aren't enough Hopkins-esque, nasty *******s out there these days :deal I like his versatility as well as he can box from the outside if need be. Too many fighters rely on just having one thing that works for them & over-relying on it to work in every fight (See: Arthur Abraham) It's quite fun to watch dirty, inside scrapping as well from time to time :yep
Good point. Hilarious how much his refs have let him work inside, in the US nowadays they usually break fighters up if they stand within a foot of each other. Watched last night's fight today, wasn't it awful. The lad keeps getting the job done though.
Boring style but he is a winner - would have loved to have seen Calzaghe tested by this type of fighter.
I won't get to much into it because is not what this thread is about but a prime Calzaghe would be way to much for Ward. He wouldn't bully Calzaghe, nobody would really and Joe would just have to much speed, variety of puches, and his footwork was awesome in his prime. It would be competitive but id take Calzaghe to win on a card of 116-112 something like that, 4 or 5 rounds,
I don't know weather i'm losing it mentally, but on first glance.....i keep seeing different titles. Like this one was... "Andre Ward- Horrible Hair Style or what..!! Its funny how the brain does that, its been doing it allot on here of late.
Andre Ward is a special fighter. He might not look pleasing to the casual eye who get turned on by fighters taking punishment and swinging for the fences. But it takes a trained eye to appreciate what he does. He is like Hopkins in that respect. Give me people like him over these 'athletes' anyday of the week. He's not the fastest, most athletic, strongest nor is he a big puncher, but he's out bullying bullys and starting to perfect the nuances. And has learned his craft even this early. He's doing old school stuff like blind folding, pivoting properly etc. He understands angles and is a animal on the inside, which is truly a lost art. I don't see whats "horrible" about that. People call what he does "leaning in" and "ugly" but he has a brillient sense of timing, which gives him the ability to punch with his opponent and smother power shots. None of these guys at super middle would be favourite against him IMO. It's gonna take someone with video game athleticism and speed to beat him. Ironically i think Dirrell would have a good chance. I haven't seen the Bika fight in full, but from what i saw he did well. Controlled the fight, beat Bika at his own game and dominated the second half of the fight. The problem i saw was that he was really trying for the stoppage instead of letting it come. This led him to fight Bika's fight. He should've boxed at longer range and countered Bika's looping shots more. I've never seen him leading with as many hooks, which was a product of him going for the stoppage IMO. I got the sense he was trying stuff in there too. Anyway he got the job done and didn't look as bad as people are saying.
