Guess you didn't read the hatchet job by Gavin Evans (Hamed and Lennox Lewis biographer) in UK trade paper Boxing News a few months back.
Love the way when Dempsey heads off set off of the game show the woman on the the far left of the panel just gazes longingly off camera at Jack as he wonders off hahaha - Jack is very self effacing which is kind of makes him even more endearing - even more so than my man Rock - what a guy - he really was a gentleman outside the ring haha and the bit where he plants a kisser right on Willard's face at the end of their little dance haha doesn't get anymore camp than that LOL
But you got to look at that for what it is. Sure Dempsey look impressive, but at the same time, Willard was not as hard rock in shape he was vs Johnson years early, and the fact he was inactive. The role would play again years later when Dempsey Tunney, Dempsey not in the top shape he was, and of couse the 3 year lay off. Tunney look close to being Willie Pep or SRR or SRL in the first match, because Dempsey could not close the gap, and was out pointed badly. Now I am not comparing Willard to Tunney, but I think Dempsey would have look less impressive had he had a better fighter in there like Ali or Louis or even the Rock. Dempsey may or may not win, but like Ali vs Williams, I dont relly hold that victory on some kinda of myth victory of Dempsey being unstopable.
Dempsey, talking against Dempsey's legacy, that seems odd ! What you are doing now, should of, would of etc ,can be applied to any fighter in history. Give me your fighter you think would beat the prime Manassa Mauler, and I could play the SAME game, you play... First of all it is true that Willard was not the Willard of Johnson...But ,slower Willard may have been since Johnson, a fighters chin usually remains the same... Besides, Dempsey's slaughter of big Jess was not an abberation...In one year prior to the willard bout, the prime Dempsey [at his peak],flattened Jim Flynn 1 Bill Brennan 6 Arthur Pelkey 1 Fred Fulton 1 Battling Levinsky 3 [never kod before] Gunboat smith 2 And a slew of lesser fighters, before his ko of Willard in 1919. You say that you dont adhere to the "myth" that Dempsey was unstoppable. No one fighter is GOD, including your fighter whoever he, may be. But I believe the prime Dempsey conbined pantherlike movements, tremendous two handed power, with a bobbing and weave style, chin tucked in his shoulder, making him tough to tag solidly, and finally, a will to destroy not seen before or since in a heavyweight. Not perfect, but until someone with more attributes comes along, Dempsey would do fine, against ANYBODY, were he in his prime...Take care...
I am not saying Dempsey was not great. He was great. But people on forums and Dempsey fans, pretty much say that on July 4th 1919, No one could have beaten Dempsey, Hell I seen it mention in a copy of docs IE the Marciano Ali Superfight doc says pretty much the same thing in regards to Dempsey Willard. Dempsey on that day is put up as a God. Like Tyson is vs Spinks, or Louis vs a few first round kos. I am more impress with Dempsey outpointed Gibbions, than I relly am vs Jess Willard. I suppose if I had to thown a fighter for you to tear down. I suppose I give you Barney Ross on a pound for pound level. I am a Dempsey fan, dont get me wrong, but even I see that Dempsey failed to do certain things to get a top 5 ranking imo. What gets him in my top ten is more of his impact on the sport.
Impact on the sport should never even be considered when doing an ATG list, thats ridiculous. Ability, wins, losses, draws, who they had those wins losses & draws against & performance throughout career.
Well on that ALONE, would be hard to rank Dempsey because well, compare to other top ten champions, Dempsey was pretty inactive and did fail to meet his number 1, 7 years in a row. Something like that could in theory drop Dempsey out of the top ten, and I cant relly see a top ten with out Dempsey some were. Sullivan makes my top 20 pretty much on impact as well.
that would scare the **** out of me if their was really new footage..that would mean someone is fliming dempsey in 2010
Met Dempsey at his restaurant in NYC shortly before it closed..I was in total awe...shook his hand....nothing but class.....truly a boxing legend!!!
thats one of my youtube channels.....i just stole that from some other site that someone had posted here.
This content is protected Dempsey c.1950 with his girlfriend at the time 19 year-old Joan Olander, who soon after became film star "Mamie Van Doren", who incidentally appeared What's My Line ? too [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNrSV9n52n4[/ame] Dempsey certainly lived a good life.
