Lewis reason for not giving vitali a rematch.

The reason people ask "would Vitali have won if not for the cuts" should be obvious. In a rematch, he may not have had a grazing shot tear his skin open like that.

In which case, what would have happened?

It's a fair question, but ultimately - who gives a ****? This **** has been going back and forth for so long that it isn't funny.

And not to mention that DR Fragile was not exactly up and about - how long did his injuries put him out for?

So the Klits wanted LL to not only give a rematch to a loser but then wait around whilst Dr Fragile postpones fight after fight and then retires himself!

It makes it hard to be a Vitali fan when I see all the crap about this fight being posted in this thread and many others.

Fact is Lewis never had to fight Vitali in the first place. Lewis chose to replace an injured Kirk Johnson with the toughest available challenger. Vitali got his shot and went beyond everyone expectations and gave Lewis the toughest fight since he fought a prime Mercer.

Lewis legitimately won the fight. I don't get the controversy, Vitali did very well and proved he belonged at that level but he lost the fight. Despite a great start Lewis was able to turn the tide and was getting stronger as the fight went on.

Do we spend countless hours questioning how Henry Cooper would have done had he been allowed to continue against Ali? No of course not but for some reasons some Vitali fans cannot accept that their fighter lost, very sad.

Had a rematch occurred I believe Lewis would have done better as he would have been better conditioned and prepared and Vitali's cut would not have had enough time to fully heal as it did receive a cut in the exact same place when he fought Sanders.

Another victory over Vitali would have silenced the doubters but really would not have added much to his legacy, in fact it might of made it worse. Vitali's whole legacy is based upon that fight and had Lewis beaten Vitali more convincingly in a rematch critics will simply point out the first fight as another sign of Lewis' inconsistency against poorer opposition. Would Vitali be so highly regarded now had Lewis beat him more convincingly in a rematch, and would it have lessened the first victory by making Vitali seem less formidable and more as another blip in Lewis career when he had underestimated his opponent. Had Lewis rematched and beaten Vitali in convincing fashion, Vitali would be seen as another McCall or Rahman and nothing more. By the rematch not happening it has added to both fighters legacy.

 

Corrie Sanders was a friend of Lewis and Lewis was his promoter, so your conspiracy theory about Lewis advising him is unfounded. Lewis also advised Sanders on what to do to beat Wladimir, long before Lewis and Vitali ever fought!

 

I agree with most of your post, but this isn't quite right.

Vitali jumped into the spotlight with that fight.

He built his legacy since then on his own accord. Highest KO percentage, barely losing a single round, being so dominant that challengers refuse to fight him...

Wlad didn't fight Lewis, but has built a legacy similarly.

The point I was making was in response to the OP. He posted about Lewis saying he would win the rematch as though this was proof that he would actually win the rematch.

Lewis being a full half a stone havier than his previous fight (he was 7.25 lbs heavier against Vitali) was clearly flabby, footwork was clumbsy, no handspeed, no timing but still managed to win 2 of the 6 rounds (the last 2 before the stoppage so arguments that Vitali would have won the fight had it gone on when there was still half a fight to go and Lewis finished the stronger fighter i don't know) and won a legitimate stoppage.

Also the bull**** about Lewis slumping on his chair meaning he would have lost had the fight gone on... Vitali spent most of the 6th round having a rest on Lewis's shoulder and then still took him about 40 seconds to walk across the ring to his corner...

 

yeah it was started from a punch lewis threw on the inside, holding and hitting, you cant see it exactly from the hbo camera angle but after they separate vitali has the cut when he didnt before.

yeah lewis can get some credit for bending rules and pulling out the win but there is also a lot of luck there as well. Put it like this, what would lewis' strategy be for a rematch, hope he gets cut again?
