STEVE COLLINS - I Don't really know the details on this one. I know Collins was calling out Jones. I also know they finally agreed on a fight in 1998 but Collins collapsed in training before the Calzaghe fight, before they ever got to fight. I'm still not too sure about all this. If someone can give me more details about this fight it would be appreciated. JAMES TONEY II - In '95 Toney moved up to Light Heavyweight and was leter fighting at Cruiserweight full time in 1997. Whereas Jones didn't move up to Light Heavyweight until 1996. By that time anyways Toney lost twice to Montell Griffin and hadn't beat a notable fighter since Charles Williams. What the hell was the point of making this fight, when Jones ****en schooled him the first time around. NIGEL BENN - In 1993 Jones was offered to fight Nigel Benn for his Super Middleweight title. Jones was too inexperienced at the time with only wins over Jorge Castro and Jorge Vaca on his resume at Middleweight. Instead of fighting Benn, Jones chose to fight Bernard Hopkins for the vacant IBF Middleweight title. In 1995 Jones was calling out Nigel Benn and Don King in a video which I can't seem to find anymore, sorry. I don't know why this fight didn't happen around '95 but it should have. Out of all these fights this is the one taht should have happened the most along with Michalczewski. I'm sure both Jones and Nigel wanted the fight. Personally I think Don King screwed up the negotiating of this fight. Maybe the fight could have been made in 1996 if he could have beaten Thulani Malinga but obviously he lost and lost two more fights after that to Steve Collins, major drawbacks. VASILIY JIROV - I don't even know why this guys name even gets brought up. Jones didn't even fight at Cruiserweight...I guess it was because Jirov was a big puncher so Roy Jones "ducked" him when they weren't even fighting in the same division. CHRIS EUBANK - Roy Jones used to call Eubank up eariler in his career asking Chris to give him a shot at the title. Eubank always said no if I fight Jones, people would be like who is this guy he's fighting. Eubank stated Jones was a nobody at the time. (Not sure what year this was). Chris also said he would ONLY fight Jones if he was a mandatory for his belt. Then in '96 Eubank called out Jones saying he wants to fight him...This is just after Eubank lost twice to Collins. All Eubank wanted was one last big money fight, Jones said there was no point of making the fight now. LENNOX LEWIS - Yes he probably ducked Lewis but can you blame him? A ****en 6'5" 250 pound Heavyweight? Jones would have gotten KTFO and he knew that. BERNARD HOPKINS II - Jones offered Hopkins a 60/40 split in 2002, which was more than fair. Hopkins didn't take it, instead he wanted a 50/50 split. Why the hell would Hopkins deserve a 50/50 split, when Roy already beat him once in 1993 and was already a champion at Middleweight, Super Middlweight and Light Heavyweight? Not to mention by 2002 Roy Jones had Hopkins, Hill, Woods, Malinga, R. Johnson, Vaca, Tate, Castro, Griffin, Gonzalez, Toney, Sosa, McCallum, Pazienza, Thornton and Harding compared to only Aquino, Trinidad, G. Johnson, Jackson, Brown, Holmes and Vanderpool... MICHAEL NUNN - The fight was offered to Michael Nunn, but Michael said Roy was getting too much of the purse in which I agree with him. This was in 1998 when Nunn was faded to **** and hadn't beaten anyone since 1993 Merqui Sosa. The timing was never right for this fight to get made. JULIAN JACKSON - Didn't he get destroyed by Gerald McClellan twice? Once in '93 and another time in '94. Oh yeah, let's just add Jackson to Roy's ducked list because he was a big puncher and would have shattered Roy's glass jaw mandible. GERALD MCCLELLAN - This superfight would have happened in '95/'96 if Gerald beat Benn but he suffered life threatening injuries in the bout. I mean they were both American fighters they couldn't hide or duck each other, the fight would have surely been made but it couldn't for obvious reasons. DARIUSZ MICHALCZEWSKI - You know the story, both fighters didn't want to leave their home countries. Personally I think Dariusz should have came to America, who in the **** was Dariusz at the time? Nobody knew who the **** he was. In the 90's if you wanted to get recognition you needed to go to north America to make a name for yourself and Michalczewski didn't. GRACIANO ROCCHIGIANI - I know they had that thing with the WBC Light Heavyweight belt but who the hell was Rocchigiani in 1998/1999? He was a washed up bum that's what he was, no point of making this fight. FRANKIE LILES - I read that Jones and HBO offered Liles a 7 figure contract to fight at Super Middleweight in 95/96. Frankie turned it down. I don't know how accurate this is but it did come from Jones own mouth. Random Quotes - Roy Jones reportedly had an agent at the Benn - Malinga bout to offer Nigel a unification bout. Of course, this was out of the question following the Judges' decision - and if Benn fails on July 6 this match, which he wants so badly, will be out of the question for good. Q: "Do you think Nigel Benn would come out of retirement to fight you?" Jones: "Benn's coming out of retirement to fight Stevie Collins, who he lost to in his last fight. I don't think he'll beat Collins, but I will be fighting, hopefully, Stevie Collins next year too." Q: "Did you have plans to fight McClellan before he got hurt?" Jones: "Yeah, in fact, I was gonna fight the winner of that fi ght. But when Benn won, Don didn't want to do that because Don doesn't totally have Benn. Him and Frankie Warren had Benn together, so Don King didn't want to make that fight. DI: "What about Nigel Benn?" Jones: "If he beats Collins, sure."
Do you have any sperm residue left on your mouth after you just cupped Roy's balls for an entire post. I'm sure Roy is proud of you.
Great reply ... there is at least 10 names missing on Jones resume and they are bigger than the names which Roy have beaten except Toney.
but the problem is that they are mostly either heavies or euro fighters who had skills but never bought the 'ricky hatton guide to getting off your ****ing ass and making a name for yourself overseas instead of calling out roy jones from the safety of your homeland but doing jack**** about it'. you should buy that book. it's a good read. i hear hatton wrote it over the space of 3 whole fights that eventually gave him a crack at mayweather and pacman....
well I know he didnt want to fight benn because he was afraid of the fight getting over-emotional, ugly and dangerous after what happened to his good friend mcclellan
I'm not going to read all that. But from the length of the post, I've come to the conclusion: Roy ducked a lot of people!
**** it, i'll say it good post. imo, roy avoided some, tried to fight a LOT more than people give him credit for and even made offers to some of the best in his era. still, those are a lot of missing names on his resume...
thing is.... other than lewis, jones wud have beat all those guys on the list.... only the g man could have upset the prime roy jones, but its more likely he gets UD'd
What I find ironic is that you give him a pass for ducking Benn because it was "too early" and then say that he was calling out Eubank at around the same time??? If it was too early for Benn why was it not too early for Eubank?? Jone did duck some fighters and realised too late that he should've taken all of these guys on to cement his legacy. IMO that's why he's still fighting now.....because he regrets not taking on all of these fights in his prime. The real shame is that he'd have probably smoked all of them and be a top 10P4P fighter now.
guys like benn and eubank were champs 3 years before jones. benn destroyed barkley 3 years before jones even fought hopkins
Like I said I don't know what year Jones was calling out Eubank it could have been after the Hopkins fight, I don't know.
