Collins was based in the states almost his entire proffesional career and had two world title fights in the states (mccallum 90) (johnson 92). he was trained by goodie petronelli and laterly freddie roache. collins was a name in the states and he wasn't calling jones out from the safety of his homeland
Jones biggest trick was to 'act' like he wanted to fight someone then he would either overprice himself or offer a ridiculous payday like he did to Nunn which was like 125k or something silly like that. After 'acting' like he wanted to fight someone he would then go and fight an Otis Grant or an off duty cop, or a bartender or something like that.
have a look at the below clip. interview with collins after he beat eubank for the first time, he was calling out jones since 1995 and jones ducked him. fast forward to 6:20- he calls out roy jones and anyone else that wants to know; [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxf82Uvo_v8[/ame]
:good anyways The only fighter on that list you can say he might have avoided was Nigel Benn. The truth is though, they both tried to make the fight happen but it didn't for unknown reasons. That's all you can really say. Roy Jones didn't show a weak jaw in his prime, he was only knocked down by Lou Del Valle up at Light Heavyweight. He got in the ring and took punches from Hopkins, Toney, Sosa, Ruiz, Griffin and Castro. He went the full length of the fight with five of them them so give him some credit. But it's your opinion you can say he would have got his glass jaw mandible shattered by all fighters on the list and that's why he ducked them...but there's one thing you know that's true and that is Roy Jones has a better resume than anybody on that list.
And for those who want to know the winner of the Collins Johnson fight would have had a crack at Jones ..Guess who won ??
Collins had a huge Irish-American following in the states and he might as well have been fighting in his hometown for the bouts against McCallum and Johnson. either way, two past it, though still good, fighters in McCallum and Kalambay made him look like a neanderthal in spots and RJJ wouldn't have had any trouble walking Collins into some chilling shots
That's a great post Commando. :good I think Roy now probably acknowledges that he should have tried harder to land some of those fights...
i think this is the best way to put it. did he duck a lot of fighters? no. did he do everything to make those fights happen? no ****ing way roy tried, but not hard enough. he did just enough to make an honest effort and said "**** it, i'm roy jones. I'll just fight glenn kelly instead and look like ****ing superman"
