Ward's just dull. That's all it is. He may be effective, but he's one of those repeat watch fighters. When you've got an afternoon, he's good to watch, beer in hand and admire his footwork, or how he positions his shoulders to fire quick shots off inside while creating room to get out. But at the time... **** me, it's dull. Too many people are praising him over too little. He's obviously very talented, but measuring his greatness against guys like Green and Bika is horribly premature.
You'll learn to appreciate him soon enough, Dftaylor. :good We don't wonna make it sound like Ward is this unbeatable machine, he'll definitely lose at some point, especially when he comes across a better pure athlete who can get off first and avoid getting caught in the booth. But when i see a young fighter doing veteran things, knowing his way inside and fighting old school, it just turns me on (no homo lol) i get excited by that. It's like watching Jersey Joe Walcott and the guy is only in his mid 20's. We rarely get that. It seems "dull" and i agree with you it's gonna be a problem for him, in terms of drawing huge crowds and crossing over (no matter how much they promote him). The problem with boxing though is people wonna see what they can comprehend and understand. It's easy to appreciate a fighter taking or giving back and forth punishment with wild swings. What Ward does is harder to understand because it's a lot more subtle. That's why people who know boxing, such as yourself should be less hostile towards him.
I've been saying Ward is special for some time now, I tipped him to win the super 6 at the start. I remember him beating Makarenko in the amateurs and the guy hadn't been beatin in years and he had a bad start if remember right then completely changed tactics and hammered him, his style is old school and he has mastered the art of in fighting but don't be fooled cos this kid can do it all, very strong physically & mentally and does everything correct. I fully expect him to dismantle AA and then go on to a super fight with Froch. Like I've already said though this kid is a bit special with old school qualities and technique too!! For me personally I think he is brilliant and I'll continue to study him ;-)
Don't be fooled mate, you seen what he did to Kessler and look how he performed in his next fight against Froch... Ward is an elite level operator make no mistake about that :good
Froch won't give a **** There'll be some digs about Americans all refusing to travel and not owning passports..... Dirrell being a whiny ***** etc etc.
I've never denied that - I think he's excellent. But it's also fair to say Kessler is quite diminished from what he was when he faced Calzaghe. But at SMW and LHW, there really aren't many guys who can beat him. Maybe Dawson if he can sort out his offence.
Good points Tony, but i felt he didn't need to fight like that against Bika. He had more than enough pure boxing ability to box rings around Bika. Ward-Froch would be a fascinating final, both place a lot of emphasis on the mental aspect of the game and neither will give an inch. I just dont think Froch would allow himself to get beat up against Ward up close, he wouldn't accept it basically. Also i dont think think Ward will have the walk in the park with Abraham that some people think. A desperate man is a dangerous man.
If he does fight Froch, all I ask for is a level playing field. If Ward beats Froch under fair conditions, I'll have massive respect for him. Froch won't stand for Ward roughing him up like Green, or even Kessler. He'll give as good as he gets and it should be a fascinating fight.
:tong Look at the tricks he's picked up which an old Jersey Joe was using. Look at how he turns and opens his glove to avoid getting hit on the back of the head. Look at how he seems as though he's doing nothing, stays in the danger zone but rarely gets hit clean. Look at the way he hits you on the hips and the blindside of the ref. Good stuff, Tony. :good
Andre said after the fight that he decided to go in and fight like that as he likes rough fights like that. If the time comes for him to box rather than fight, I'm sure he'll do the former
