How many rounds does Greb last against Hearns?

I agree Burt. In the last couple of years I've read up a lot about Harry Greb. The Human Windmill would have severely tested Tommy Hearns.

 

A better question may be is
"How many rounds does Greb go with all the fighters in the Kronk Gym
before getting knocked out?

If Hagler can get Hearns outta there in 3 rounds I'd say Greb can also considering the IBRO rates the Marvelous one at #6 all time and Greb at #1

Better question: How many rounds does Hearns last with Gene Tunney, Kid Norfolk, Mike ODowd, Tommy Gibbons, Mike Gibbons, Bill Brennan, Joe Borrell, George Chip, Jack Dillon, Battling Levinsky, Bob Moha, Eddie McGoorty, Jeff Smith, Leo Houck, Charlie Weinert, Tiger Flowers, Jimmy Slattery, Jimmy Delaney, Mickey Walker?

Id pick all of those guys to beat Hearns. Id also say that a lot of the lesser known guys like Bartfield, Roper, Allentown Gans, Ratner, Wiggins, Bogash, Jamieson, Clay Turner amonog others would have had a shot to beat Hearns based on either their size, durability, or punching power, or just their general underrated skill.

Guys like Rosenbloom and Loughran, who didnt show a lot of power, may not have stopped Hearns outright but they would certainly be favored to defeat him.

 

Greb wasn't the puncher that Hagler was, and in fact rarely ever KO'd world class opposition. When he was able to stop them it was usually through attrition, therefore of the TKO variety. Basing an analysis of a fight on how highly someone is ranked by comparison to another is not the brightest way to go about things.

Greb certainly lost to lessser fighters than Hearns

 

I think his style, excluding power, would foil Hearns's night if what is written about him is even half-true. He was obviously very strong, strong enough to compete with heavyweights, he put on a lot of pressure by all accounts and was quick to make his way inside the opponent's reach, which allowed him to compete against the likes of Tommy Gibbons and Gene Tunney.

Hearns is probably not going to be able to keep Greb at bay. It didn't take a Marvin Hagler to accomplish that, even Barkley was able to do it, though not without absorbing some punishment. With Greb's toughness and determination, I see him being able to impose his strength on Hearns eventually and outwork him. Had James Kinchen not been a career "bottler" he could have probably got the job done as well.

When a man fights hundreds of times, he is bound to lose some. But Greb got the better of most opponents, and rarely lost decisively.

 

Greb doesn't hit very hard though, rarely stopping opponents. Hearns has the advantage in speed, reach/height and should be much technically better given writers of the time called Greb's technique 'amateurish' and Hearns own great jab and right. Greb likely has the edge in stamina and workrate down the stretch. Stylistically Greb had problems with faster men and that is said to be why O'Dowd beat him. The much smaller Bartfield beat him and gave him hell in their other fights

I'm not going to make a pick without seeing Greb in action but Hearns would from what I can gather the best opponent he ever faced, although ofcourse not the biggest

 

I have heard conflicting reports about the O'Dowd fight, and there are good reasons to believe that Greb was weight-drained. O'Dowd was also a physically very strong fighter.

It's impossible to say how Greb vs Hearns would go but I think there's more reason to believe that Greb could take the fight to him than that Hearns would knock him out. Even Tunney's jab didn't really do the job for him against Greb, he matched his strength and concentrated on the body.

 

I don't think Hearns would necessarily knock him out, I wasn't agreeing with the OP, Grebs chin and canny nature in the ring is proven. But I do think Hearns likely has the best jab and right he'd face, even better than Tunney's. Hearns at his best is 1 of the best early round dangers in the history of the sport.

All in all I'd say neither man would have faced anyone quite like 1 another. This and the lack of Greb footage makes it impossible to predict
