TEARFULLY ending his professional boxing career, world light heavyweight champion Danny Green said no amount of money could tempt him to reverse a decision to quit made after an early-morning Easter Sunday "epiphany".

In a move which will cost Green millions of dollars, the 35 year-old emotionally quit the ring saying his future as a husband, father and grandfather was more important than defending the WBA title he won last December.
And while Green said he felt fitter and sharper than at any time in his 16-year career, he also believed he was making the decision of a wise man to walk out of the sport at his peak.
"I woke up at 1am Sunday morning with my stomach churning, and it was telling me to hang up my gloves basically,'' Green said.
"You can imagine I have struggled with the decision as I believe I am at the top of my game and the peak of my career as a professional fighter.
"I have never gone against my gut feelings and I am not about to start doing that now.
"There is going to be questions about whether there is anything wrong with me physically, the answer is categorically no.







"It was almost like I had a premonition, an epiphany - I am not religious by any stretch of the imagination - but I do listen to my stomach and that is what it has told me.
"I have clarity, it was weird but that is the way it is. I leave with my dignity and my health intact.''
Green was in preparation for his mandatory defence against Argentinian Hugo Garay at Challenge Stadium on April 27, having abandoned plans to train in Perth in favour for his usual Sydney surroundings.
But after wrestling with his decision for hours, he said he was happy and content.
"You won't see me come back. I am turning down millions and millions of dollars,'' Green said.
"My decision is not financially based, it is based on myself, my family and friends and what I have to offer the community in the future.
"A lot of people will think I am crazy, but a lot of fighters stay in the game too long and that is not going to be me.''
With the Garay fight off, the much talked about rematch with Anthony Mundine - which would have brought both men monster paydays - also won't eventuate.
"It would have been nice to go out in front of 20,000 fans at Burswood with a massive rematch but it is not to be,'' Green said.
"All I would say to Choc is keep your chin down and look after your health because it is a very tough sport ... and thanks for a great rivalry, because you have made the sport so much more exciting.''
Mundine's manager Khoder Nasser said Green's retirement would be a loss to boxing, and he hoped he would reconsider.
"Danny is a gentleman who was part of the greatest fight in Australian history, he fought back from adversity to become a world champion again and his retirement is a massive loss to boxing,'' Nasser said.
"Every man is entitled to change his mind and we certainly hope he does so he can fight Anthony again.''
But watched by a large group of family and friends, including his wife Nina and two children Chloe and Archie, Green said he would now be pursuing other business interests, as well as staying involved in boxing in an official - and possibly unofficial - capacity.
"Boxing is always going to be part of my life, but instead of dealing with the sharks of the sport out there, I will be dealing with ... any prospective boyfriends (for Chloe),'' Green said.

If anyone here suffers from selective memory it's you - you've made 3 claims that I denied and still you're trying to push them, plus more accusations now.

At the same time you ignore the questions I posed to you at the end of my previous post which begs the question - what are you here for? To post boxing artciles that you spend your days scouring the internet for and to throw accusations at other posters as soon as you, the self-appointed objective white knight of ESB, deem them to have crossed the line?

You got any original thoughts, or are you just a search, cut and paste-bot?

Eaglewood had a bet with Bozza over whether or not Mundine would ever fight Kessler - it had nothing to do with Green.

The ignore function was not around at the time of the Green vs Mundine fight - EelsRule was still posting here long after that fight, when the ignore function was eventually introduced.

You should make sure you get your facts straight before you start self-righteously accusing others of anything. You never did answer my other question from a few weeks back - if you were so offended by me cracking a joke about Stone working with physically and mentally challenged people, why didn't you pipe up at the time instead of waiting 4 years and bringing it up when I disagreed with you about something else?

As I said before, it just makes you look like a mealy-mouthed sook, saving up transgressions to use against people when they cross you. Be the man you seem to think you are and speak up when it happens.

Has the irony of your grim determination to hold Green to his word on some occasions, and choice to disbelieve what he says on others never occurred to you?

1. It is also on the mundine documentary that there was a rematch clause and it is straight from mundines mouth, so ill go with believing the man

2.Wikipedia is a bull**** source amd posted it as a rebuff to the only
source saying mundine weighed anything near 86kg, a SMH tabloid article, which is equally or more bull**** then the wiki link.

3, Most of the ****wi cough "experts" that picked green have been long standing mundine haters with as much a clue as yourself so no worries there !

How do you honestly compare a comback filled with utter **** match ups and zero challenges agains over 40 shot as **** or younger havnt fought in 3 or so years, physically ****ed or havnt won a fight in atleast 2 years as evidence that he is improved?
To me its evidence that he has no confidence realises he is **** and is giving himself a pension!
If he was worth a cent he would be fighting the other title holders in CW at CW and would have been doing that years ago!
Mundine may have moved backwards, but green has found the delorian and he has gone back a millenia:tong

 

1/ You told me in this thread very that Flash didn't say there were no rematch clauses (including none applying to Soliman III) - I simply proved you wrong by showing you that he did say it.

2/ Mundine did not play anywhere near the end of his career at 73kg.

3/ Forget the haters mate, of which there are a growing many. Only Mundine lovers would select him to win a rematch with Green, and you've proved just recently what an astute judge of Green's capabilities you are by losing $4000 on an opponent who won about 3 rounds!

 

1. You didnt prove anything, you stated there was no rematch, there is conflicting evidence, the mans own mouth says there was, so not ****in proven, lol your a sped. (not that my argument is proven, its a clear fence sitter)

2 Never said he did, said he played at it , put on some at brisbane in the centres and played around 81kg at that stage, stated he never got near 86kg and the only source saying he did was a SMH tabloid article, so if you think thats proven your a very closed minded person

3. Luckily thanks to working hard, university and my current job i dont care that I lost $4000 (i only ever bet with what i am happy to kiss goodbye, its called gambling right?) I still think it was a fantastic bet at the odds of $7.50 to one it was the pick of the century! If BJ had have had a heart he probably would have won!

Didn't feel it was necessary to start a new thread, but I saw an TV ad with Greeny advertising "work safe clothing" or similar. Great to see a boxer get a TV plug again. Must be the first since Fenech and Samboy Chips or Champion spark plugs.
