That might be a fact but that's not the reasons. More important reasons are an improvement in refereeing and quicker stoppages, boxers fighting less frequently and other medical advances in the modern day world. 24 hour weigh ins may help a bit but the weight divisions would be a tiny factor, especially when they're so frequently abused.

 

IMHO the 24 hour weigh ins have had a massive impact on the number of ring fatalities since they were brought in.

 

I think the 24 hour weigh in is OK - but they should introduce check weigh-ins and maximum in-ring weights too.

I guess the impact of going from 15 to 12 rounds will take a while to be determined....

 

tris dixon the editor of boxing news did a piece on this 2 weeks ago. he said its a massive factor. i take his word ahead of yours im afraid.

 

dont think it needs to be determined. clearly its made a difference. when was the last time a boxer died or was paralysed after a fight??

 

To play Devils Advocate mate the whole point of the 24 hour weigh-ins is to allow the fighters to rehydrate fully. A soon as you put limits on the maximum in-ring weighs you are not letting the boxers do that.

 

The issue I was driving at was more long term damage as a result of the extra three rounds of trauma.....

I'm thinking Riddick Bowe/Meldrick Taylor here specifically... they are both damaged as a result of fighting 12 rounds.

A major difference is the referees and corners these days..... you only have to look at the 1970's even, Cooney vs Norton.... Norton is propping himself up in the corner getting teed off on and the referee waits until about six shots have landed before stopping it.

I'm not wanting to get into a debate about bull**** stoppages (especially with British refs) but these days lots of fights are stopped cautiously - i.e. when it's obvious of the outcome, rather than letting the outcome materialise.

I'm sure in the future as a result of this, there will be far fewer long term health problems for fighters.

I'd buy a club here in Peterhead and another out in Aberdeen. What I'd do is fill it with amateurs of all abilities and get some top coaches paid full time to work there. I would also look for a promoters license and have a show on every 2 weeks in the club in Aberdeen, advertise it for cheap tickets and just get sports fans through the door, but lots of them. Making the shows up with the boys from the two clubs (am's and pros), for local appeal, and get them fighting regularly.

Surely, you will have at least a few good fighters and I hopefully would have made the NE Scotland a massive fight fan area. Get the top local talents big fights and get a massive following locally, but still keeping everyone busy.

Then hopefully, rival promoters, managers etc... come along to Aberdeen and keep my work going indirectly.

At this point if I had money left, I would start again in another city like London and build it up.

This is the best way IMO to really get boxing into a golden age.

 

* Buy up all the 'World' federations
* Set up unified rankings and invite the former titlists in each division to take part in a tournament to decide the overall champion
* all fighters who wish to be ranked will pay a small administration fee every year based on earnings. Guys earning less than $10,000 a fight will pay only a nominal fee.
* Run my own TV channel that is aired in the US, UK, Mexico, Japan and other regions either through cable, satellite or online. Prospects will be featured for free to encourage people to watch them and build stars.
* Big events with the top fighters will be featured on the main sports channels. This money will be used to fund the free-to-air fights, along with revenue generated from sponsorship and advertising
* Fighters can only lose their titles in the ring, unless they are unwilling to make a match with one of the top three fighters
* Ranking are based on who beats who, not who has the most powerful promoter
* the org retains rights to screen all fights on the free channel and promote the fighters' likenesses around the world, but takes no ownership over the athletes image and sponsorship. Basically, the money they make outside of the fighting is theirs.

 

Hydration is a massive issue, especially since the body needs time to recover from being dried out. If you've ever been dehydrated seriously (marathon, etc.,) then you'll probably have had a serious headache. That's because your brain is lacking fluid to hydrate and keep it safe from bouncing off the walls of your skull.

Without that, every time you take a punch, the brain is taking more damage than if you were hydrated.

It also effects your kidneys.

Medical advances play no part in what happens in the ring. But medical safety features like the ones Frank Warren introduced after Michael Watson's rematch against Eubank make a huge difference. Access to oxygen, saline drips, and trained personnel are lifesavers in a particularly brutal fight.

Would be immense for the sport

****ing hell...just looking on boxrec results i see that Lookdiew Tor Buamas has just won the vacant WBC International Silver light flyweight title.

i'd put a stop to that **** for a start!
