I'm Filipino and I've never heard of him until now. But he's getting a small headline on Yahoo sports right now and top story on the boxing section of ESPN. Why is there such interest in him in particular? Is he actually that good? Was Pacquiao's rise since 2005 like this as well? Was anyone predicting him to rise so high as a P4P champ?
Very athletic, very skillful. Yea he is a very good fighter, a top contender. He's not P4P #5 good (Ring as him in their top 5, which I think is absurd) but he has the potential to be a top P4P fighter though. He first really came onto the scene when he KO'd Vic Darchinyan in 5 rounds back in 2007.
WTF??? Join Date: Jun 2009 You're Filipino, and have been on a boxing forum for over a year and a half...but don't know Nonito Donaire? :blood Or is it Glenn you're just discovering?
Don't worry, you're not the only one who's never heard of him. He's been with Top Rank for years and nobody still knows who he is. Bob Arum refuses to put him on any Pacquiao undercard and instead puts him on shitty ppvs, that nobody will pay for. He's just not as marketable as Pacquiao because of his style. He's more skillful than Pacquiao but lacks the overall agression, power and output that Manny has. Very fluid boxer. He's pretty good, its that nobody wants to fight him at his comfortable weight, so he has to move up in weight. He's making an 8 pound jump which is lusually a bad thing with the smaller lighter divisions. He's American, not sure if he was born in the PHilippines or if he just lived there as a kid. But he panders to the filipino crowd, obviously.
he's a fighter who has been wasteing the past couple of years fighting nobody of note and not fighting much.
Born in Bohol, Philippines but their family moved to General Santos when he was a toddler. His mother was Manny pacquiao and Buboy fernandez's elementary teacher. Buboy was his protector from bullies during his elementary years. Damn, that's a trivia I can't help sharing to a fellow pinoy. Their family later moved to America and yes, he's a Philippine born american.
damn didnt know buboy and manny were that close.. just looked it up and read that they were neighbors since childhood..
Born Manila and raised in the states. But none of my friends or family over there or here have mentioned him. I'm mostly just surprised by these headlining stories about him.
Well, that's Nonito Donaire too. Born in Bohol, moved to San Jose, CA as a young teen. Came from a boxing family. Fought another Filipino-American Brian Viloria for a spot on the 2000 Sydney Olympics U.S. Boxing Team and lost. He hasn't had any real big name fights since he KOd Vic Darchinyan in 2007. He's been beating opponents rather convincingly. You should watch his fights on youtube. He reminds me alot of Floyd except he's a bit more offensive minded.
He wil be ruined after he faces Euro-level superstar Wladmir Sidorenko on Saturday. I feel sorry for him, but at least he has stepped up. Most domestic titleholders, such as Floyd Mayweather, Timothy Bradley, Chad Dawson, and Demetrius Andrade refuse to give Euro-level athletes a chance.
