He needs a better trainer, needs to either get with billy nelson or get the hell out of scotland.

Never been overly excited with Appleby, he's always looked a bit slow and ponderous to me. Not trying to chuck the lad on the scrap heap, I just saw him as a domestic fighter. He edged a close one against Simpson, could have gone the other way and just outsized a past it Pickering, but he was shown up by a fighter with good skills in Lindsay and the same happened here. Though he's young he's always looked a bit slow and lacking in genuine power to really develop further.

Sure he can come back from this and mount a challenge for domestic honours though. Needs to seriously work on how he's going to get inside against boxers and work on his own jab.

Jab, head movement, foot work, slipping punches...

All things Appleby ignored for most of the fight. When he came forward, he looked good. But he rarely did, never sustained an attack, and allowed himself to be backed up all the time.

it was an atrocious performance. I think Appleby is clearly at his level without a better team behind him. Hopefully Warren pushes him in the right direction.

His stamina was also total **** tonight if you compare it to the Simpson fight. He couldn't find any snap in his work and couldn't maintain any sort of pressure.

Appleby should move to Northern Ireland and join up with John Breen for months.
He would get ideal sparring and with Breen he wouldnt be allowed near a ring unless he was fit for 13 rounds....

Appleby is done. Too much hype. Decent fighter but people were going over the top with him. They rushed him and that has put him back very much so.

    sums it up nicely.
even back a couple years ago at the height of the hype he looked way too open, getting tagged by nobodies. He just seemed to walk through his opponents punches to land his own, that will get you found out at some point. His power didn't looks that great either.
He seemed to believe the hype too much, you could see that in the interviews, where he also said after one fight 'i'm good looking as well eh!'
    a bit too cocky.

appleby is a good fighter. got rushed far to soon but thats the case with alot of tommy gilmour fighters. think the long lay off didnt do him any favours after the lindsay fight. really think he needs to take a good look at himself. he used to say in interviews that he needed to work on his defence but never done anything about it. think he needs to go back down to featherweight and possibly link up way billy nelson...i mean look wot the guy did for ricky burns and john simpson. appleby can definetly win a british title but alot of improvement will b needed if he wants to reach his potential.

also the whole carry on with wantin him to fight ricky burns. yes it wud of been a ticket seller but lets be honest judgin by last nyt and previous performances burns wud of counter punched appleby all night long and probably of stopped him coz appleby wud of taken to many clean shots.

anyways hope paul can come back from this as its only good for scottish boxing to have as many top fighters as we can. good luck paul

After the first judge's score was announced I thought, robbery. Lucky the other two scorecards were straight. Laryea won it with the jab, Appleby was beat after the first round.

Same goes for everywhere all the irish think Frampton and McCloskey are the next coming of Sugar Ray and Scouse think Bellew will smash Cleverly in 1, it just supporting your own really.

As for Appleby, he has been promoted pretty poorly his whole career really, Gilmour pushed him too far too early and Frank was just using him for a big domestic money fight vs Burns. He needs to go back to the drawing board and build up slowlying fighting for brit/comm then eventually moving on to Comm.

Applebys opponent last nite highlights a massive problem in British boxing and it serves warren right for his cheapness that appleby got beat. These African fighter are probably a hellova lot cheaper than the british equivilent which im guessing why they are used so much. It puts the fighter at a massive disadvantage as finding footage of there past fights and even a complete record may not be possible, meaning the coach and fighter cannot work on a statagy for the fighter. Inaddition british boxing suffers as a result of the use of these african fighters as the money they are paid goes out of britain and british fighter without a major promoter will have to lower their purse just to get a fight.

    Rant over

Actually a lot of Irish people are worried for McCloskey because of his age and the fact he hasnt stepped up to world level. There is an Irish thread you can look at if you don't believe me.

As for frampton I think people have hyped him up a bit but nobody said he is world class. They said he has world class potential. But I get the jist of what your saying.

I think Appleby has been rushed in his career and it has denied him several key skills that could have been learned with a better apprenticeship.

I also think Appleby lacks a wee bit of solid fundamentals. For example, he never once showed the ability to parry a jab, he rather just blocked it. And even a small thing like that can equal the difference between winning and losing.

I think him being rushed meant that he always had things his way a wee bit young, then he stepped up and he never really shed that mentality. Stubbornly sticking to a gameplan, using hsi physical gifts and grinding out results. In this fight it showed he can't just grind out results, he needs to adapt and have gamplans.

He can still come again though, and hopefully he will. As he is an undeniable talent, just hopefully it gets put to its full use in the future.
