Do you think punching power is a gift you're born with or is it technique?

You are born with power, you can improve your power (not massively) with technique.

You're not born with power, you're born with a set of muscle fibres which enable you to carry big speed, snap, torque and explosiveness when you deliver a punch.

That's why you see some big muscled up guys but can't punch for ****, but then you see smaller guys with big big big KO power. It means they got the raw material to become a power puncher, which is brought out through training and maximizing what you have.

So essentially, like I said...you are born with power. You just expanded on it.

No, if Tyson never trained or was taught to box, he wouldn't be a puncher. All those years and years of practicing and perfecting his punches and simultanously developing those punching muscles developed him into a big puncher. His genetic predisposition to being a muscular stocky kid with fast twitch muscle fibres and strength in the muscles necessary for punching makes him more likely to be a big puncher once trained

The only explanation needed is one word. GENETICS.

I had no real formal training on how to throw a punch before I started boxing training, i'm not a big guy at all (5'8" 140 lbs) and when I first started hitting pads/bag/sparring in training I was told I hit as hard as some heavyweights. So I would say it's definitely about natural athleticism, technique and the right exercises will help fine tune but it seems as though you either got it or you don't, unless of course your technique is so damn bad in the first place that you can't throw with any power.

It's like with any other thing: painting, playing the guitar, playing chess...
Almost anyone can apply themselves, train hard and be GOOD. The potential for being GREAT, however, is a thing you're born with - but you have to discover your talent and work on it.

I'm sure there are boxers out there who could've been huge punchers, but have spent all their focus on being elusive, accurate, careful, etc., and will never reach that level. Along the same line of thinking, I believe there are good basketball players out there who could've been ATG fighters, if they discovered that early; there are journeymen fighters who could've been excellent soccer players; swimmers who could've been sprinters, etc...

So yes, you're born with it, but being born with it is not all. If you're born with it and too lazy to develop it properly, a dedicated fighter can develop his power to a higher level than you.

Hey, my mum is quite a reputable trainer, thank you!

Oh, and by the way I didn't make any claims about being a great boxer or anything else, I'm just saying I punch above my weight.
