Yes..I think Baer..when motivated...always that caveat, lol...would have taken Schmeling. The boxing world never saw the 100% Max Baer except for this fight with Schmeling...and maybe that wasn't even 100% Baer.
I guess a bit like Riddick Bowe in that respect then... Although Bowe showed about everything he had in the first Holyfield fight imo.
I think it has to do with the nazi-jewish thing. Schmeling wasn´t an anti-semite, Baer presented him as a Jew and Schmeling was seen as an anti-semite nazi. Schmeling had jewish friends, his manager was jewish and I think he didn´t want to be seen as that. He never liked the way the nazis portrayed and presented him or the way the Americans saw him after the nazis seized power. I think he may have had some psychological issues. Then maybe I´m wrong and he just had a bad day.
