How many rounds does Greb last against Hearns?

If only we had even ONE film of Greb in action then it would be easier to pick him in a fantasy H2H matchup. It's so frustrating to decide how he would do against modern ATG's when we can't look at 1 film of him in action. There has to be a film of him fighting somewhere on some shelf collecting dust. The man had 300 fights. None of them were recorded? That's insane! Without any film evidence it's extremely difficult for me to judge how he would do against another fighter. Written reports and other peoples opinions can take me only so far. I need to see Greb in action. Based on his amazing record he would probably matchup well with anyone in his weight class. But how he would actually do is very difficult to say without any actual footage.

 

jj,i am positive that there no film os Harry Greb existing.Too bad. But if one or even two films were found,it would depend what fight or what part of a fight would be seen. as I posted before,the old Used up Greb with about 295 fights, fighting Tiger Flowers, in his last bout, wouldn't be the
real Harry Greb anymore than a film found 90 years from now, showing
Ray Robinson absorbing a beating from the trial horse tiger Jones, or
being dropped by Joey Archer. This was not the real Robinson that 90
years from now, these future fans would see. Or Ali,films oif him fighting
Larry holmes, Trevor Berbick,or even Leon Spinks...The same with Greb.
But,,,,We do have films today of Gene Tunney, tommy Gibbons, Tommy
Loughran,Mickey Walker, all GREAT fighters who Greb Licked,and each of
these men RAVED about him, as being the best...We do not have to witness a tornado, to see the damage, but can tell it's potency by the havoc we see later.. And so with Harry Greb.
P.S. There are no films of Jack Britton, or Maxie Rosenbloom ,available,
even though they both had 300 bouts or more...

Difficult question to answer - lilely GREB would last until he knocked out Hearns or until Hearnc quit in his stool from exhaustion.

The wording of the question, however, gives the impression like the author is trying to minimize HARRY GREB which is below the cut-off line for bright posts.

anyway, tommy seemed to get REAL uncomfortable with physical fighters who could get inside his jab. the beaten tunney absorbed will pale in comparison

Ever heard of a guy called Iran Barkley? A crude brawler who got a UD 12 over a certain Tommy Hearns.

 

He had one KO when he was a teenage light welterweight, and one TKO retirement from a broken arm. This was in almost 300 fights including many LHWs and even some heavyweight boxers, and includes all his fights when he was way past his prime and could only see out of one eye.

That means he basically had a better chin than, say, Lamotta. And it was more tested than Hagler, since he fought LHWs and even HW boxers. Greb may have had the best P4P chin of all time.

 

Im amazed someone said Tunney had poor footwork, positioning, and timing. That is just utterly nonsense. Those were in fact the three things that allowed Tunney to be so successful. Watch how he uses his footwork to maintain his balance, punching position, and distance, then watch how he times his punches INBETWEEN his opponents (the hallmark of excellent timing). It was his timing and judgement of distance that allowed him pick Dempsey apart like a surgeon. people will say Dempsey was past his prime (which I dont agree with) but even so you would have to be a special fighter to basically 19 of 20 rounds against Dempsey.

 

Totally agree about Tunney a masterful boxer althought it is a falacy that Tunney won every round bar the 7th round of the second fight - thats just become a lazy routine thing to say but it is not true

 

I disagree entirely. I think Tunney did indeed win every round but the seventh in the second fight and even in the seventh he was back beating Dempsey easily by the end of the round. There were also a couple of rounds that he had Dempsey hurt in a corner and was battering him pretty good. What is a lazy routine thing to say is that Dempsey did better in the second fight. I have both fights complete and Dempsey was more competetive in the first fight than in the second with exception of the knockdown. I still think you can easily argue that Tunney took 19 of 20 rounds against Dempsey.
