Would Vitali have beaten Lewis if he was not stopped?

They've timed that break and its bull****. Its an urban myth that Ange Dundee never denies because it puts him in the forefront of the drama.

 

Yeah that's true and I agree that Lewis stopped Vitali fair and square. But it was a close one whilst it lasted and even though he got stopped, there's plenty there to say that Vitali could more than hold his own against Lennox Lewis and he deserves credit for that in my opinion.

 

The worst version of Lennox beat the best version of Vitali. Vitali was brave, strong and fit but there was an obvious gulf in quality which Vitali could never bridge. Lennox was a far better boxer than VK will ever be.

BOTH fighters went in there at short notice (after change of opponents). Lewis partly looked bad because Vitali MADE him fight. Lewis was reduced to swinging and holding.

 

Would Vitali have won if Lewis had not punched his face off? Perhaps.
The same way Harrison might have beaten Haye if he hit back and didn't get decked.

I think it was becoming Lennox's fight but Vitali was giving him a run for his money. It still amazes me how he took that big uppercut in the 6th? Imagine Lennox landing a shot like that on Wlad.

 

I'm amazed that anyone other than a rabid Klit fan thinks he would have. The round before the stoppage was his worst by far, in which he was rocked and ended the round hanging on and trying to tie Lewis up. The fight had begun to turn by the 4th and the 6th was easily Lewis' best round. The awful cut was only going to get worse, make it even harder to see Lewis' shots coming and even harder to judge distance properly for Vitali.

I think he would have got through 7 and 8 but being losing both rounds and with the cut horrendous. He would have become a sitting duck and taken out in the 9th or 10th. He also might have never fought again as he could very well have sustained permanent eye damage.

No the fight was actually a win, ie the rules of boxing state that if you cannot continue due to a cut caused by a punch then you lose by TKO. You might not like that rule, but it is there and it is something all fighters have to deal with and understand.
