Hey guys, I posted here about 4-5 months ago because I hurt my left knee to the point where I was limping for a few days because it hurt that much. It was the result of a 4-5 mile run one day, plus me waking up the next day and feeling some pain, but ignoring it and dismssing it as soreness, and doing an intense sprint workout anyway. The day after had my knee REALLY hurting and although i can walk normally now, I cant jog any real distance without igniting that same old feeling in the same spot.(outside the kneecap of the left knee)
    This content is protected

so i feel the pain about where it says lateral collateral ligament(left knee though)

IT SUCKS BALLS. I know u basically cant box w/o roadwork, so i havent been in the gym since july, and ive tried to jog LIGHTLY, and i mean SUPER lightly since then( like three or 4 times since it happened, and I cant get past 1/6 mile. The pain build up too much, and I have already been to a doctor who gave me an x-ray and an MRI scan and the doc says"oh u have a little inflamation over here(the left knee, but NOT the spot that was hurting) but nothing serious at all, you can get back to training:thumbsup" This was september, I tried JOGGING lightly the next day and im all ****ed up again.

What the hell am i gonna do? Ive taken all kinds of joint supplements and they havent helped. If the doc says im fine, but i cant run, so Im obviously NOT fine, do I just quit being active, something I absolutely love?? I wanna get a second opinion, but MRI scans are expensive so IDK if my insurance will cover a second appointment, Im so ****in sad and depressed right now cause of this, someone please give me some advice.

Airdyne bike or versa climber can be just as good as running if not better

Get some physio if you can afford it, and rest it, the worst thing to do is train on an injury, you dont have to stop being active, just cut out the impact on your knee. Try swimming, its great for stamina and endurance and is low impact on the joints. I know its difficult to cut out the training that you usually do but its the best thing to let the injury heal.

I'm not doctor or anything like that, but I've had problems in my knees since I was 13 which sound to be similar to what you have. Sounds to me like you have torn the meniscus in the knee or possibly some kind of cartiledge problem. I had to have an arthroscopy (camera with a hoover on the end) to suck out all the floating cartiledge and other bits and bobs and then rest with the leg straight for two weeks to heal the tear. It took doctors about 2 years to decide that that is what the problem was, which was far from ideal for me at the time.

I really struggle with the pounding of roadwork as a result of similar symptoms, get yourself down to a running shop and have them specify some proper running shoes to take away some of the impact. I also find it easier to run on a treadmill, or go to the nearest football pitch and do sprints up and down on there.

hi mate im not a physio but ive ha d a couple of niggling problems with my knee since coming back from a pretty long time out injured(although mine is on the inside of knee).

But yours sounds like it could be a injury called 'runners knee' although this is supposed to ease with rest, like has been said going to see a physio is best they can be a little expensive but its worth knowing what is wrong and not doing further harm.

You might have a problem with your meniscus - you might want to check it out. If not, you may have patellar tendinitis (runners knee as mentioned above) - if you do buy yourself a Cho Pat Strap and wear it every time you do roadwork. It's a band that goes around your knee right under the kneecap - it looks like nothing but it did wonders for me after my ACL surgery when I got patellar tendinitis in my right knee. Good luck.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. What is a physio? A physio-what? Sorry Im not medical savvy. Oh and if it is runners knee, how long does it take to heal??? Cause i havent really trained hard on it since july. Its prob been like.

2 failed running attempts in july.
0 running in august, but i got wrecked sparring in a gym due to a lack of fitness, which pisses me the **** off, I hate not having gas.
1 failed run attempt in september after the doc told me i was fine(*******)
    0 in october
    0 in november.
and not leg work(squats, burpees, etc.)

I would think it would be healed by now!!!

You need to strengthen your legs before you run again. You don't need to run to box. Try sprint cycling if you want to ease the impact on your knees

Google "Runners Knee" thats what it sounds most like. see what kind of treatment options are out there although its usually treated with rest(not running) anti-inflamatory meds Ibprofen (advil/motrin) or naprocin(aleive) and physio thearapy...no reason why you can't hit the bags & spar just find a different form of cardio that doesn't aggrivate your knee swim, do the bike etc..

I got my leg really mangled in a judo accident about a year ago now. I was unable to walk unassisted for about 2 weeks, and then was unable to walk without limping for another 5.

I found personally that icing regularly (particularly after long walks and such) helps immensely with the pain, as any kind of exertion will likely cause a small amount of swelling to come back.

If it gets to the point where you can walk normally, rehabilitation is necessary before you go out running again. Personally I continued with my squat and deadlift routine, making sure I used proper technique and a pair of TK knee bands to minimise the stress on my knees. If you haven't done squats before, have an instructor show you how to do them properly, or you WILL make your knees worse.

For a long time my knee wasn't quite right, but with a pair of good running shoes to minimise impact, and with continued use of kneebands during boxing/wrestling training for about 6 months after, I am finally able to train without knee supports again.

of course, this is just what I did, and relies on the doctor being right when he said there was no serious injury to your knee.

You need to rest. When I had a knee injury it took a few months for me to be able to train normally. I decided to do whatever else I could to strengthen my body without further aggravating the injury. I had to refrain from running, which is the worst **** for a sprinter, and instead focus on an area I didn't focus on very much previously, like core work. You can continue your weight training and stretching and core work, etc. I used a kind of skip/run like leg workout (next to no knee action, instead using a heel to toe movement at a very fast alternating pace but slow speed down a 60m track) so that I was at least maintaining. Basically, if you can't run or even jog like I wasn't able to, focus on another area of training. Running isn't essential to boxing, I'm a sprinter and I got through it with rest recovery, you can do the same.

UPDATE! I just ran on the treadmill today 12/9/10, for 20 minutes very slowly at a 2.5 and i did not feel it... One change tho. I did it barefoot. I saw a bunch of videos on on minmulist running and i decided to try and i did not feel much pain.... im gonna try to stick to this for a few weeks.

oh and also, the big change was that i ran toestriking/midfoot striking for the first time in my life cause i heard it easier on the joints. I hope so bad this gets fixed.

Keep at it bro. With luck, you'll be back in the gym in no time. I experienced something similar a while back in Muay Thai where I got swept off my feet at a bad angle and felt pain in my knee (just under the patella region). It took a couple of weeks to heal up but it was fine after that. Keep us posted.

Its gonna be like teaching a righty to write lefty, ive never walked or ran on my toes, dedication is not the problem though, i just hope that that was what was aggravating my knee and i finally fixed it.
