They don't see it because Hopkins disguises it so well. He's almost made an art form of fouling. He's like a magician doing slight of hand tricks, he shows the ref one thing, which is just a distraction and then does something illegal right under his nose. Hopkins is as crafty and as cagey as it gets.
i would agree with you IF THIS WAS 1933, if he was just a guy with a dirty rep, but these guys all his fights are on tv and all the refs have watched his last fight and the fight before that and know excatly what he will do it's like me going to a magic show and i know how the tricks are done, if i tell people i dont know its done when the magican is doing it then i am not telling the truth
Not in the accuracy or ring smarts department. He doesn't waste punches much and is a pain for anyone to fight even at his advanced age.
*U forgot the Headbutting ... The way people talk about this guy..hahah...funny. It really proves my point... if Hopkins wasn't an American, We wouldn't even be talking about him... and Visa versa, if Calzaghi was American, we'd have people saying he's the greatest thing since chewing gum...
Hopkins was dirty but that wasn't all there was to him as a fighter and why are you brining up Calzaghe?
When you're throwing 10 punches a round, it's hard to be very inaccurate with Hopkins's style. The bottom line is: he was always an accurate puncher and a well-rounded technician. Recently he's just been a minimalist spoiler, albeit an accurate one.:good
He's always tried to bend the rules in his career but in his prime he was pretty active which many people forget. Many of his fights didn't go the distance but since they do now Hopkins is more accustomed to going the distance. Now he takes breathers and like you said throws less but in his prime he was an offensive-minded fighter though he was still clever. I think he broke the number of powershots thrown in a fight against Joppy(yes that was Joppy of all people but it was still a good display of offense from Hopkins).
I've never said Hopkins wasn't an excellent fighter in his prime. I've only mentioned the decline of his overall abilities as he's aged. The reason being that I'm a curmudgeon who refuses to give any modern day fighter their just dues, and who will go to any lengths to criticize them. Including bringing up the steady decline of a 45 year-old fighter as if it were news to anyone.
Lol, he has declined I'm not ignoring that but I like to think of fighters for what they once were. For example, when I think of Hagler I like to think of the one of the Sibson fight not the one of the Leonard or Mugabi fights.
