Andy Lee to face Sergio Martinez 4 the WBC middleweight title in New York next March!

**** fight if it happens. Especially as it was only the other day Martinez rubbished a Pirog fight because it wasn't big enough.

 

lee has a very small chance to win this fight

i dont see martinez as this unstoppable force
lee will be his first real middleweight who has real midle weight power
against opposition not very good admittadly hes shown he can pack a punch
martinez movement will trouble him but lee for all the shite he gets for the vera figt is a very competant boxer
alot of quality fighters have lost early in their careers and came back to be great

and on munroe we all know his only chance was his size the chap was tottaly outclased
his opponant tearzas in the eliminator had a [padded record and was mexican hence why he was in a wbc eliminator auld jose doin a great job there

I also reckon Cintron at 154 punches harder than Lee at 160lbs.

Pavlik had stopped every opponent he'd faced at 160lbs, the only times he'd been taken the distance was in fights above 160 and his two losses.

I think Martinez can crack, he KO'd Cintron with one shot (regardless of the BS outcome) and also Williams of course.

A lot of his fights were scheduled over the shorter distances..... I'm sure over ten rounds rather than six several of those would have resulted in stoppages.

You are correct that he isn't unstoppable, I mean he was down against Pavlik and Williams in the first fight..... but both of those are more proven than Lee is right now.

I'm not going to **** on Lee for taking this fight, in fact quite the opposite. Would be hypocritical of me to do so after having slated him/his handlers for taking so many meaningless fights over the past couple of years.

 

Despite all the **** I've given Lee here, I actually hope he wins even though I'd take a lot o flak afterwards. There is a lot of love for Martinez in the Brit forum but I don't suscribe to that. I respect him but its always fun to cheer on the underdog when you don't really have a preference and thats what I'll be doing here. Can't see it happening though.

He does have more chance than Chisora and Casey of other underdogs going into world title fights at the minute, but thats not saying much as their chances border on 0.

I've acknowledged Lee's stamina and defensive issues plenty of times. I said in this very thread that if he can overcome these issues that he can potentially be world class. If you follow the thread you will see that my point was that Lee has just as much chance if not more than some of the other underdogs who have went into big fights lately but the only time there is a problem with anyone predicting a win for the underdog is when the fighter in question happens to be Irish. That's how this whole debate started. I'm not saying Lee will win, all I'm saying is that his chances of upsetting Martinez are greater than most would think because he does have attributes that could win him this fight. Try to follow the thread before you reply in future.

When Irish fans can support their fighters and predict a win for the underdog without being labelled as biased, the way British fans do all the time on this forum, there won't be a problem. It happens in every single thread so don't tell me to get off my high horse.

I think a lot of people forget Lee has a good amateur pedigree. He has a a great straight with either hand. Nice upper cuts to the body. I think Lee actually has a better defense then Paul williams, mainly due to the fact that Bryan Vera forced him tp improve it.
Martinez has fast dangerous hooks and has footwork that Lee won't be able to compete with.

For this reason I am almost certain Steward will tell Lee to counter punch instead of hunting Martinez down. I know Martinez will be the heavy favourite but I am 99% certain it won't end early like Williams. Lee will respect Martinez and keep him at bay as much as possible. Martinez will more likely feel Lee out in round 1. In the next few roudns Martinez will come looking for Lee with in and out short 1-2's. Lee should not use the jab defensively like he normally does. He should use it offensively byt throwing it less often but more snap like. As long as Lee has his left hand cocked he has a chance but if Martinez is smart he will refuse to chase Lee and bring him in to the championship rounds. If Martinez KO's Lee I'd bet it will happen in rounds 9-12.

In fact, I'm not going to bet on this until I see how much the bookies rate Lee. If they have him as a 10-1 I'm definitely going to take a punt. At 4-1 or less I'll resist. But the best way to bet on this fight would be to see how the first 3 rounds play out. It really depends on whether Martinez underestimates Lee and whether Manny Steward & Joey Gamache figure Martinez out. But don't expect a Paul Williams 2nd round ko.

I'm a bit torn with this one..

I like the idea of Andy fighting for a world title, but at best I can only give him about a 20% chance of beating Martinez...

Still though, even a 'good loss' can kick start his career, and who knows maybe he does beat martinez....

However, Andy really needs to work on his defence in particular his head movement and tying up....

 

I know you've been slated for these posts but I agree with nearly everything you have said.

I'm Irish and would love to see an Irish middleweight champion but I honestly don't see Lee winning for many reasons, most of which have been highlighted in the quoted posts.
